Unfortunately, when the surgeon had gotten in to work on my dad, he found carcinomatosis, which basically means that the cancer has spread to his abdominal cavity. The primary tumor was not removed, as it was deemed more risky to do so than not, given the extent of the spread of the cancer. We have yet to talk with the Oncologist, but with a bit of coaxing, the surgeon reluctantly admitted that typical life expectancy for someone at my dad's stage is three to six months. With additional chemo, this might be extended a bit, but he probably doesn't have more than a year at the outset.
He was up and walking yesterday, and could be discharged this weekend, if his system resumes processing food and they see a few other indicators that he has recovered sufficiently from the surgery. I came back from NY last night, but
atricilla and I are planning on heading back on Friday evening, after work and kid-shuffling (they are with their mom this weekend), under the assumption that my mom could use some support, whether or not he has been discharged from the hospital.
Update: It turns out dad will not be discharged this weekend. No word, as yet, on when he will be able to go home.
