What I enjoy most about fandoms is not in creating original characters to explore the pre-set world, or going overboard with fanon facts-unless I have to, given that I do "headcanon" off how I personally perceive the stories and characters. No, what I love to do is research. I can spend countless hours lost on the Internet, going over websites and articles and interviews, just so I can understand my favorite characters better. I knit-pick to death. And when I get something in my head, no matter how oddball it may seem, I'm usually hell-bent to find it out. Even if I have to work through translating foreign-language sites. I did it for Tokyo Majin Gakuen franchise, for both my fan fictions, as well as the wikipedia. And I had so much fun!
Enter Cartoon Network's Young Justice. Upon doing my homework, I noticed that Greg Weisman was asked about the character of Eduardo Dorado Sr., and whether or not he was from any of the comics. Because think about it, they made a point of introducing scientist Dorado long before Runaway Dorado (who is based on the
Super Friends El Dorado), in a minor background way. Could have simply been build-up for bringing in little Ed, but Weisman's reply was: "No spoilers." That's understandably his usual response, however, it was intriguing!
Rumors seemed to be in agreement that the character was perhaps in the Captain Atom series which Weisman co-wrote in the '80s. Logical, given the throwbacks. Dr. Dorado was often seen
alongside Captain Atom, and in the final episode Endgame, Ed was paired with the Captain for his mission to disable the Reach's Disruptors (not seen in the animation but mentioned on Weisman's site). My guess would've been for the Invasion! tie-in issues which Weisman wrote, but not so; he's not in the parent Invasion! comics either (not that I remember, anyway). Nobody could say for sure, though.
But then, the other day I stumbled on something that made me go:
I present to you DC Comics imprint Vertigo and their 2004-2006 comic
Bite Club. The story of a mafioso family of vampires in Miami, squabbling among themselves for control of the business after the patriarch is murdered. Finding out his killer is a big part of the sexy, cinematic crime-drama plot.
What does this have to do with Young Justice?
The murdered crime-lord vampire was Eduardo Del Toro Sr.
His eldest son is Eduardo Del Toro Jr.
Their home estate is called
El Dorado.
Wasn't expecting that.
The senior is from Nicaragua, not Argentina, and YJ Eduardo Sr. looks more like the junior Del Toro, as
seen here. Still, the likeness is too uncanny. I'm seriously assuming it wouldn't have had much to do with the plot-line of Young Justice, if it continued. I mean, vampires? Vampires! Try getting that into season three. I think it was merely inspiration with creative license, probably from researching the previous DC El Dorado incantations. But still. Yeah, uh, wow. Mystery solved?
In a way I'm glad. Now
Bring Him Home can stand on its own without breaking canon. Plus, I have more freedom with my next fic about the Dorados (if I ever write it).
