Once I read a detective story that started with a main character having a short chat with a random girl who never came up in the story again. It was a big scene of the main character talking to her and I spent all of the story thinking that she's probably connected somehow to the detective storyline. But she wasn't. But if she was a random girl with no connection to any character yet she had to be in this story, then the chat itself had to be not random. And I reread the beginning and added it to everything else the story told me and I had a good moment of understanding the story better. I love looking back and seeing more.
