Summary: Methos takes a new job some distance from where he would normal call home. This is first day in his new city, but is it really a new city for him?
Amand-r's Note: Auberus is in hospital right now, and we wish her a speedy recovery! Take it easy!
I look around my new office, looking forwards to been away from Earth for a while. The thought of having a few years away from the game was so appealing, I took this job even over the fact that I would be working for the military. In fact both military and scientists would surround me. The two put together would normally make me run, but as soon as they told me about this place I just had to take the job.
It was strange been back after all these years of thinking Atlantis would have been destroyed after the attack. The Wraith were right on top of us back then, it was going to be a matter of hours before the first attack came and we were all told we had to leave Atlantis for Earth.
I know just before we headed back to Earth there were rumours about a woman appearing from the future, but I just assumed that it was all just hearsay to get us out of the city faster. I for one wasn’t going to wait around for the wraith to show up to blow Atlantis to pieces.
As I look around now I see the slight differences from back then. Yeah, there are the obvious changes of the bulky up to date Earth computers and all, however there is a more subtle underlying feeling. Not been able to work out what feels different I shake my head and went to get something to eat at the mess hall.
The mess hall is almost empty when I arrive and it’s not until I check my watch that I see that it’s well past lunchtime. I spot a small group of people at the far end who seem to be in deep discussion about something so I decide not to head over to them. I grab a tray and quickly pick a sandwich and some fruit I remember eating way back when, although for the life of me I can’t remember the name we used to call them. I go to a table and put down the try then walk back for some Coffee. I guess the one thing I’ll miss while I’m here is going to be the Beer.
I eat my lunch at a slow pace, as I’ve got no work at the moment. I was advised to get myself acquainted with the city before I start work first thing tomorrow.
The other people finish their discussion and brake up and head out and I am once again on my own. It must have been about ten minutes later when a woman enters. She looks around then goes to get some food. I turned back to picking at my food. I must have gone back to reminiscing about the Atlantis I once knew, as the next thing I recall is the woman sitting opposite me.
“Would you mind if I sit here?” She asked in a kind voice.
“Not at all. Adam Pierson.” I reply and smiled that in a manner I’ve been told is rather sweet.
“Teyla Emmagan. I do not believe I have met you before?”
“Just arrived here this morning.” I answered whilst nodding my head.
“Well it is nice to make your aquantance Adam. I am sure you will like working here.” Teyla smiled again and then started to eat.
We made small talk for a while and it wan’t long before Teyle was offering to show me around, as it turned out that she wasn’t working today either.
As we walked around the city and she told me were everything and everyone was I was quite surprised that they had kept the original layout more or less. Although I also found out that they were still exploring the city and the areas where some of the delicate projects were been held still hadn’t been fully explored. That was the area I was here to help with. I was going to be helping the exploring scientist with translations of the writing that was found.
Before long it was getting dark outside and Teyla showed me to my quarters and bid me good night.
As I settled in bed for the night I couldn’t help as I threw my mind back to the time when I was on Atlantis the first time as well as looking forward to at least a few years on Atlantis to find out what truly happened to my creation after I left.
Flashback
“How is your working coming along, Methos?” The commander’s voice asked from the doorway where he stood.
“I will be finished shortly. I only have the last pieces to do and then they should be fully operational. I would say they would be ready for a field test no later then the end of today.” I replied not taking my eyes of the screen in front of me, while my fingers worked like lightening across the consol.
“Be sure they are ready, they may be our last hope of defeating the Wraith.”
I nodded not sure if he saw as moments later I heard his footsteps moving away.
I once again glanced at my creation before me knowing they would save our lives. Self-replicating, self-sustaining machines that would have thoughts of their own but the bases line programming to attack the Wraith. They would advance and inevitably become more then I could ever dream but that base line program will always say the same. It was the one sure way to be safe from the Wraith forever.
