When they were clean and tucked into Ferus’ narrow bed space, Roan was finally able to think again. “I’ve gotta call the home front and tell them not to leave the door unlocked for me. Let me get my com.”
“No; don’t move.” Ferus held his hand out, and Roan’s clothes came flying toward it. He graciously allowed Roan to unhand him long enough to look through the pockets for the device and key in the code for home.
“Levitation comes in handy, doesn’t it?” Roan remarked as he waited for someone to pick up. “Oh, hello, Siddy. What are you still doing up? Did Faro have her kittens already? No, I didn’t really think she would. Where’s Meemaw? Oh? Well, I’d like you to tell them not to leave the gate off for me, that’s all. I’m staying over with a friend. Don’t forget, okay? We don’t want robbers in there with you. Yes, really. Go to bed soon now, Siddy. Good night.”
“Kittens, huh?”
“Yeah; her kittens are in demand, too.” Roan smiled and tucked the com back into a pocket before Ferus made the clothes fly back to the peg. Then he nuzzled at that long, creamy golden neck and put his hands back where they were wanted.
“You’re magic,” he murmured, eyes closing. Ferus nuzzled back, his voice nearly lost somewhere in the thicket of Roan’s hair.
“Not magic. I just have an unusual skill set.”
“I am now acquainted with some of your skills. And I want to know more.”
Ferus laughed and combed Roan’s hair with his fingers. “Whatever this is we’re doing, it’s wonderful. Don’t stop.”
“I won’t if you won’t.”
“Then I won’t.”
And he was perfect enough that he never did.
