Witch Weekly Annual Holiday Party (Thursday 12/19)

Dec 16, 2013 12:00

The Holidays were a cheerful and festive time. In fact, this season was Daphne Greengrass's favorite time of a year. Everyone seemed to be in a better mood around bright lights, wrapped presents, and the jingle bells. It was about the only time that she preferred to see snow on the ground rather than feel the sand between her toes ( Read more... )

Mandy was surprised when her work team had received the invitations to Witch Weekleys party. She knew it was to be an extravagant affair and was happy for Anthony because this was sure to be good publicity for his gallery. She immediately went look for a dress and soon fell in love with the one she chose. It was so unique and eye catching that she had to have it.

She had asked Andrew to be her date but that was more so she would have a date she knew she would have a good time with. Also she didn't want to be the only one attending without a date. She didn't expect him to be by her side all night and she was positive he wasn't expecting anything from her. She would be content with a dance or two and him actually acknowledging her in front of his friends.

The place was exquisite looking, Daphne had outdone herself. She had transformed the gallery and she knew Witch Weekly would be please. She stood with a glass of champagne off the side of the dance floor people watching.

Drew wore a suit to work everyday, much to his displeasure. It felt like some strange form of torture to sit at his desk for eight hours constricted by a tie and fitted jacket. Somehow, though, he felt differently as he got ready for the Holiday party. It actually surprised him that he was looking forward to an well dressed evening rather than a night on his sofa drinking beers with Jonah and Terry.

After dropping off his coat in the main lobby, he went off in hopes of finding Mandy or somebody else that he recognized. For once in his life he didn't feel so out of place at one of these events. It could have been the fact that Daphne, the event planner and his soon to be sister-in-law, had personally invited him or that his new suit that seemed to fit him more comfortably than his others but he definitely had a bit of a spring to his step.

He saw Mandy from across the room and smiled. She looked as beautiful and put together as always. If it had been any other day, Drew would have felt under dressed or like a teenager all over again. Instead, he walked up to her ease and placed a gentle hand on the small of her back.

"Have I been a terrible date? Letting you arrive all alone," he mused, grinning over at her.

Mandy was surprised when she felt someone touch her back wondering who it could be. Once she heard who it was she instantly relaxed. Something about his voice instantly made her feel more calm about the fact that she was here. Even though her whole work team was here and many people she knew, she had felt a bit out of place. That didn't matter any more, she had her date.

And what a fine looking date she had. She had never seen him in this, so it must have been recently new. He looked amazing in it. She knew he was going to catch the eye of several women, and who knows maybe some men, here tonight.

She wrapped her arm around his neck to give him a quick hug and a kiss on his cheek, "Of course you aren't a horrible date. I've seen lots of people meeting here. Besides it was much easier this way." She was trying to not make him feel overwhelmed. It made more sense as friends to meet there anyways.

She took a step back and held his hand and she looked him over, "Andrew you look so handsome. This suit looks amazing on you."

When she leaned in, Drew wrapped both arms around her. It felt so familiar to be there with Mandy and yet completely new and different. When he pulled back, there was an easy grin tugging at his lips.

"I knew my date was going to be stunning so I had to bring my A game," he told her.

Mandy couldn't help but blush at his comment. Even after all these years he still knew how to make her feel special. Oh why did it have to end? She was content though with the fact that they were still able to be on such good terms like that. She couldn't imagine her life without him in some way or another.

She did a little curtsy and laughed, "Well I hope your date did well enough to meet your standards Drew." Yes she loved hearing compliments from him but they knew each other so well by now that even simple things could make her smile.

She let go of his hand and grabbed his a glass of champagne from a waiter before handing it over. She raised her glass in a toast, "To stunning dates."

"Two stunning dates and an open bar," he corrected, gently tapping his glass against her's before taking a sip. It tasted much more expensive than what his mom bought for their big family meals. Though, he shouldn't have expected the cheap stuff at an event like this.

"Have you been here long?"

Mandy giggled and clinked the glass with him before taking a sip, she certainly could get used to Daphne's parties that was for certain. Especially if her and Terry were going to be together, well forever, it was something she certainly would be geting used to, provided that she stayed as close with them as she was.

When he asked if she had been here look she shook her head a bit, "No of course not." She wouldn't tell him even if she was, that wasn't proper. "I'll admit I've been people watching some. The cameras pay no mind to me so it has been fun to watch them chase certain people around." One of the joys of being a nobody unlike some of her friends.

She looked at the dance floor and saw some couples dancing and cameras flashing at some people. It reminder her of the Halloweeen Ball and better times between her and Drew. Back when they were first getting to know each other. That was before all the arguments, the immaturity. She took another long sip of her champagne finishing the glass off.

Drew laughed, shaking his head as he sipped more of his champagne. The stuff was addicting. No wonder Daphne was always holding a glass.

"I'm much happier standing here on the side lines. Did you see Lavender come in with Roger? The cameras were all over them," he said, shaking his head. It was still hard to wrap his head knowing these people - all quidditch stars, world renowned photographers, and experts in something or another - when it felt like they had just graduated yesterday.

"And poor Skylar. Being here with Harry has them all over her. She must hate it."

She nodded, "I did. I'm so happy for her. She really seems to be happy to be back with Roger. They really are great together. It's weird thinking about them being famous, to me they are just my friends." She looked around for them, "Lav and I found an apartment as well. I'm very exxcited about it."

When he mentioned Skylar she wanted to hit him over the head. She was hating this? She was sure that she was enjoying all this attention, after all she was an editor for Witch Weekly so she felt in her element. "I'm sure they will manage to get some nice pictures of them though for their posting of this."

"I'm sure there will be tons of pictures of Terry and Daph as well. With Daph planning this event I'm sure they will be fabulous," she said with a small smile. It was making her feel a bit awkward talking about all their friends. They were all coupled off with each other, and her and Drew were always just going to be exes first and then friends-ish. It saddened her.

At the mention of Terry and Daphne, Drew couldn't help but grin. The last time he had really spoken to Terry, which felt like ages ago since he had been spending more late nights at the office, he was getting ready to propose. And it was about damn time. While Drew had been wary of Daphne at first, they had grown close in the last eight years.

"I'm sure they'll be plenty of pictures of the two of them," he mused, nodding as he took another sip of his champagne. "She really outdid herself on this one. I'm still amazed."

Mandy knew as well but she wasn't going to mention it. She didn't want to wrong people to overhear and spill the beans to Daphne. Even if they didn't see eye to eye, no girl deserved to be ruined of her proposal surprise. Mandy was happy for Terry because he was happy. That's all she could ask for in a friend. "I agree. She really was able to shine in a very short amount of time. It can't wait to see what she does when she has the proper amount of time."

She bit her lip and rand her hand over her feather. She felt awkward just standing there next to him, they should be walking or something. It made it even weird just standing on the sidelines of everything. "So how's the moving plans going?"

"Moving? Oh right."

Drew had almost completely forgotten about his plan with Jonah. It seemed like so much had happened since their talk. While Terry proposing may have sped up the process, Drew was still reeling from the idea of having a sister-in-law. He wasn't even thinking about it.

"We haven't actually set anything up yet. I've been busy with the band and work-"

Oh well, that didn't help much with the conversation now did it? Thank you very much Andrew. She nodded, "Oh well that's understandable I guess. I'm sure you two will get it all figured out soon enough. Lavender and I found a place, we're moving in on Monday. I'm finally going to be out of that small flat."

She sighed and turned to him, sick of this weird stuff, "Should we - I mean do you want to dance?" There at least they would have something else to focus on, not stepping on each other's feet.

"Oh-um, yeah. Maybe we should," he agreed, shifting awkwardly before setting his champagne glass down on the table. Drew actually didn't mind dancing. He went out enough to bars and clubs on the weekend to know how keep up on the dance floor.

"You spoke with Lavender? How is she?"

For once she wasn't willing to take charge. This one was up to Drew to determine their dancing and how long he really wanted to dance. Mandy nodded and watched him set down his glass and she gave him a small smile.

She nodded, "We looked at the place in Monday. She's doing well, still shooken up. This will be good for her. I suggested a housewarming party and she's very interested in the idea. You're more than welcome to come whenever it happens."

Drew placed his hand on the small of Mandy's back to lead her towards the dance floor. It would be nice to move around a little bit.

"Looks like we'll both be planning parties then," he mused, weaving around one of the tables. "Let me know if you need a keg."

Obviously Drew's first thought was beer. Make sure a party is well stocked with beer.
