One of my pockets is smaller than the other and I'd rather lose my matches than all my cigarettes. Then it occurred to me that it might be best to leave them at home and bring only one or two and not by accident overdo it, showing up at the Prescotts' smelling of smoke, not fit for dinner, and dragging the street in with me. It is fine for a rich man to smell of tobacco since often it is a nice brand, and because he's well off you don't suspect his health, while a man in a suit too small can't help but arouse the fear of germs one hasn't even considered.
