Ah, winter. 66 degrees and sunny. Flowers blooming, birds singing, butterflies flutterbying...oh Monterey! You so crazy! It's that time of year again: time to experience severe cognitive dissonance as I attempt to reconcile Christmas decorations, wreaths and lights with sun and ocean.
Had a super-dee-duper Turkey Day with the fam, spent quality time with the sisters. Also spent some quality time playing with my sister's boyfriend's son, age 3, who demanded that we have a handpuppet Battle Royale. Snail and Monkey vs. Shuffles the Stingray and
Dr. Moody! Shuffles had his deadly sting, but Snail's biting sarcasm and razor-sharp wit proved even deadlier.
Back here at work, I had an action-packed week. I wrestled Condors, got filmed for a PBS documentary, and presented our Monarch Butterfly research findings at a local symposium. Then this weekend I went to two Christmas tree lightings, hung out at the MB Aquarium, went to a museum reception, ditched another reception, and got filmed for another documentary. And now I'm sitting at home, and have just finished listening to the Bears cream the Vikings. Just when I felt deepest woe over the fact that of the 3 football games being aired today on the west coast, NONE were the Bears/Vikings game, there came WBBM streaming radio to the rescue! Thank you, plucky Chicago AM radio!
On the heels of
canis_m's post about YA fantasy lit: since it's winter, that means it must be time to re-read The Dark Is Rising series. I brought them back to CA with me after Thanksgiving, and am up to the third book. Good stuff. Way better than the other crap I was reading (how does Robert Jordan sell so many books? And why did I feel compelled to read one?)
And now we squee about the latest SGA.
Dude! Psychic whales! Psychic whales that can KILL YOU WITH THEIR BRAINS. Just when I think this show can't get any more awesome, BOOM. Psychic whales. And there's a baby whale that Rodney loves and names Sam and John taunts Rodney and they are twelve and I LOVE THEM. And Caldwell wants to nuke the whales! And Elizabeth wants to save them! And yay for Teyla screen time! And Elizabeth screen time! And it's a sad commentary on the state of the female characters on your show when fandom gets incredibly excited about multiple female characters on-screen TOGETHER. Talking. Without any boys around. Come on, writers, get your shit together and stop wasting those ladies you created. ...but I can't stay mad, because of the psychic accidentally-killer whales.
