title: Like Normal
author: nihongofrancais
genre: RP, KAT-TUN
character: Akanishi Jin
disclaimer: Jin owns himself. America owns itself. Cheezits belong to some food company. :P
summary: There are things Jin likes about America. Cheezits. A sense of normalcy.
author's note: Stems from a challenge that I offered anamuan to work the line, "Temptation is much easier to resist when it's not sitting in your lap and wearing nothing but a plastic bag and some cheesy goodness," into a pretty!fic. She said she'd do it if I tried. And then I promised her to produce angst from it. It doesn't quite get there, but it's definitely not silly. anamuan betaed as well. :)

"It's raining really hard here."

"Is it? It was raining all last week, but finally lifted last night."

Jin leans against the glass door that opens to his terribly small veranda, watching the heavy raindrops hit the soaked wooden floorboards then splatter angrily every which way. If this were Tokyo, he would be cursing the rain for ruining his plans to do laundry that evening. But this is not Tokyo, and his apartment building had a washing machine and a dryer in the basement. He'll get around to it later.

"Good thing?"

"Yeah. I have two magazine photo shoots outside today; I'm in the car headed to the first one. What about you?"

"What did I do today?" Jin turns away from the rain and pads across the shaggy carpet, the softness squeezing in between his toes. He makes his way over to the futon sofa and plops down lazily, pulling a discarded bag of Cheezits into his lap. "Went to class for the morning. Had lunch with some classmates. Ran some errands before the weather got totally gross. Not much really."

"Didn't you say you were going to start taking lessons or something soon?"

Jin pops a decent handful of Cheezits into his mouth and then answers, "Hnn't thtarteg yed."

The voice on the other side of the Pacific laughs. Jin could hear him rolling his eyes. "Once again without the Cheezits, please."

Jin swallows, retorting, "How did you know?!"

"Remember when I was there? That was like the one thing you kept shoving at Ryo and me. 'Eat this! Eat this! It's SO GOOD! Why don't we have this in Japan?!'"

"That's not what I sound like."

"That is what you sound like."

Jin shifts the cordless phone from his right ear to his left, holding it up with his shoulder. Grabbing another handful of Cheezits, he begins to pop them into his mouth one by one. "Temptation is much easier to resist when it's not sitting in your lap and wearing nothing but a plastic bag and some cheesy goodness."

"You couldn't resist it if it was hiding in the darkest corner of your apartment. You'd hunt it down and then tear into them until nothing was left."

This time, Jin rolls his eyes. "Cheezits are not wild animals."

"I know that." There is a pause and then the conversation continues. "When are you headed to New York?"

Jin sits forward, picking up the FedEx envelope that arrived Saturday off the round coffee table in front of him. "In about two weeks." He pulls out the plane ticket, then the itinerary. United Airlines, Flight 866, departing February 7th, 11:35 PM. "Yeah, two weeks from tomorrow."

"You ready to come back to this world?"

"Haven't we already had this conversation?"

"Yeah. Over dinner with my entire group. But I want the truth."

"'You can't handle the truth.'"

"…hah? What do you mean by that?"

"Sorry. It's an American thing."

"...oh, okay. Anyway, are you?"

Jin takes a moment to actually think about his reponse to the question. "Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"I like here a lot." Jin eyes wander around his small, comfy apartment. There is not much to look at, but it is his space. "It's easy to get lost here."

"It's easier to get lost in Tokyo."

"Not if you're us."

"I know."

"My face is not plastered on every open publc space; it's nice."

"But isn't that what you've always loved about all this? That we can be larger than life?"

"That doesn't mean that sometimes I don't like to be normal like everyone else too, Pi."

the end.
