The spotlight shone on YamaPi and he spoke.

"Koyama and I have always had a peculiar kind of relationship. In the jimusho, I've always been the senpai and leader. Whether as juniors or as a part of NEWS, that's always kind of the way it's been. If I said something, he was always behind me one-hundred percent; even when I was totally unsure, he believed enough for the both of us and then some." YamaPi chuckled quietly to himself. "Having that kind of person-having him-on my side is something I've always been grateful for.

"But outside the jimusho, in the real world, he's always been the senpai. He's the one who got into Meiji all on his own and then came to my rescue when I asked him for help; I was so clueless when it came to all the hoops I had to jump through just to get to take the test, that I'm pretty sure if Koyama hadn't been there advising me through it I would've given up on my dream before I'd even taken one step toward it. When I found out I wasn't graduating on time, Koyama was the one who told me what offices I needed to go to and who I needed to talk to." YamaPi paused, a soft smile on his lips. "And it wasn't just school stuff either. If I was having girl problems, I knew I could always count on Koyama to be level-headed and patiently listen; Jin has always been too emotional about that stuff." He grinned when he heard Jin yell out an indignant, "HEY!" from the back of the crowd at the last remark.

There was more YamaPi wanted to say. He wanted to talk about more than Koyama's place as senpai and kouhai in his life. YamaPi longed to talk about the Koyama who he had grown to love over the years.

The Koyama who had treated him to ramen at his restaurant after hours and drank beer with him until they could no longer hold themselves upright on the counter stools.

The Koyama who had snuck around the jimusho building with him, looking for the best make out closets and then testing each and every single one out with him.

The Koyama who had come over to his apartment on random occasions to simply clean because he knew that YamaPi's schedule had him so busy that he couldn't even spare a moment to do that for himself.

The Koyama who had sat on his bed, watching with lustful eyes as YamaPi undid his belt buckle with painful slowness before him.

The Koyama who had eventually learned to say, "No," and walked out of his BMW, without even looking back once.

The Koyama who YamaPi still longer for (he told himself it wasn't love, because he wasn't sure he would be able to handle all the implications of heartbreak that came with it) even as he stood in front of a crowd of two hundred people at Koyama's wedding reception, giving him the first well-wishes for his new and official married life.

YamaPi knew better. It was not the time nor the place.

He suddenly wished that he could go back in time and reclaim all those lost moments-to change them for the better, to make a happier ending for himself. But he was fully aware that this was not a drama. It was reality. His reality. No fairy would show up. He would not go time-slipping into his past through photos. All that-the happy ending-had only belonged to a character he had played on television, and not himself.

Shige, acting as the host for the wedding reception, coughed, urging YamaPi to continue after his long thoughtful pause; there were others that had to speak after him. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that Koyama has been a wonderful colleague and friend and that I just cannot hope enough for his happiness, what with all that he has given me over the years." As he neared the end of his speech, YamaPi finally glanced over at the main table where Koyama and his bride sat, surrounded by their parents. "And to Minami, all I have to say really is, I hope you know what you are getting into because the life of an idol's wife can be a very hard one." A chorus of laughter went around the room. "To Keiichiro and Minami," YamaPi raised his full champagne flute, "cheers."

"CHEERS!"

As glasses clinked all around the room and a warm applause rose from the guests, YamaPi stepped away from the microphone and out of the spotlight, tugging at the tie on his suit that suddenly felt all too tight.

"You okay?"

YamaPi turned to find Shige at his side, hand on his shoulder. "Perfectly fine." He smiled widely. "It's Koyama's wedding after all."

For that one moment, Shige looked at YamaPi with sympathy. "The idol who can't fake a smile for the camera fake smiles surprisingly well in front of a large crowd."

YamaPi slowly blinked and shook his head. "Would you just do your job already, Shige?" He gave Shige a gentle shove toward the microphone, into the spotlight.

As Shige announced the next speaker, YamaPi hung back in the darkness with his few memories, watching as Koyama moved forward and stood in the light with his full future.

the end.
