"YOU SHOT KOYAMA!"
Jin just stared at YamaPi's horrified face and his finger pointed accusingly in his direction and rolled his eyes. Sitting down on the couch next to YamaPi, Jin set down the plate of microwavable yakitori sticks and two cans of beer on the coffee table before them. "Would you please stop watching that on repeat, Pi?"
Just as Jin lunged for the remote in YamaPi's hands, YamaPi stretched away from Jin (eyes still glued to the television) and all Jin ended up with was a faceful of YamaPi's shirt. "BUT YOU SHOT KOYAMA!" YamaPi cried out once more, this time thrusting the remote violently at the television.
Jin righted himself on the couch and reached for his can of beer, pondering the possibility of hitting his best friend over the head with it before he opened it. He thought better of it though-YamaPi was already pretty traumatized by the stupid drama as it was-and popped the top, taking a long swig. "Pi, it was just a drama. My character shot Koyama's character. I did not shoot Koyama."
"B-b-but…" YamaPi's lower lip trembled as he watched the drama unfold on the television-Jin tossed into the back of a police car and pale, unconscious Koyama being hoisted into an ambulance.
"It was a guest appearance, Pi," Jin reiterated once more, making a grab for the remote a second time and successfully snagging it from the emotional YamaPi. "That was the entire purpose of my character-to shoot Koyama's Ezawa. I couldn't exactly change the script."
"...you could've tried."
Jin just blinked at YamaPi and turned the television off. "I didn't invite you over here just so we could marathon through all the episodes of Kame and Koyama's drama."
"You didn't?" YamaPi took a skewer of yakitori from the table and started nibbling on it. "Then why did you?"
"You said you wanted to confess to Koyama," Jin reminded, shaking his head. "Do you remember?"
"Yeah, but-"
"We're going to practice," Jin declared before YamaPi could get out another word. "You're going to pretend I'm Koyama and confess to me. We'll practice until you get it perfect."
YamaPi squinted. It wasn't exactly a bad idea, but… "You don't have Koyama's cute single eyelids," YamaPi remarked, after staring intently into Jin's eyes. "And you're fatter than Koyama."
Jin's eyes narrowed slightly and he took another long swig of his beer. "Just go already, Yamashita."
YamaPi frowned, his eyebrows furrowing in concentration for a moment as he thought and then started. "Koyama, I like you."
Jin waited a beat, but when YamaPi did not provide anything else, he let out a sigh. "Is that really what you plan on saying?"
"What?" YamaPi mouthed from around his yakitori skewer. "It's short and straight to the point. I can't possibly fuck up if I only use four words."
"Pi, if you tell him like that he's not going to believe you; it'll be totally be out of the blue, he'll think it's a joke," Jin told him, picking up a yakitori skewer of his own. "You need to have a proper lead up."
"Like what?"
"Tell him why you like him. Why you miss him."
"I miss him because he's been so busy with the drama and hanging out with Kame. It feels like there's a black hole in NEWS or something. It's lonely."
Jin nodded eagerly. "That's perfect. Now, try again and say all that plus the 'I like you' part."
YamaPi set his yakitori aside, folded his legs under him on the couch, sat up a little straighter and then turned toward Jin. "Koyama, I miss you. You are so busy with your drama and hanging out with Kame and I'm lonely. Stupid KAT-TUN, they're trying to steal you away. Don't join them okay? NEWS would have a black hole and KAT-TUN would sound weird with two Ks. I like you." He paused, then asked, "So how was that?"
Jin fought the urge to snap back that KAT-TUN didn't want Koyama anyway, but instead curtly answered, "It needs a little more work, Pi."
*~*~*
Shiranai Kyoudai was the name of the drama. It wasn't anything terribly amazing-the melodramatic story of two brothers separated by circumstance, who are reunited as young adults-but the combination of KAT-TUN's Kamenashi Kazuya and NEWS's Koyama Keiichiro was enough to make it the must-see drama of the season and a ratings winner. If anything, it had been a ploy easily conceived by the drama's producers and Johnny himself to concentrate in the fan power of both idol groups into one drama. It had worked with Nobuta o Produce and "Seishun Amigo" after all. Why couldn't lightning strike twice?
The two idols who had hardly interacted before the drama found themselves not only starring in a drama together, but also thrown into a temporary duo-creatively named "Kx4"-and singing the drama's theme song, "What I Know". It was a medium-tempo ballad with Kamenashi taking the lead in the verses, Koyama in charge of some light rapping through the bridge, and the two of them attempting some mediocre harmonies for the chorus. Like the drama, it was hardly a remarkable song and yet, in the first week of release alone, the single had managed to sell half a million copies and was on its way to breaking the million mark.
YamaPi hadn't been jealous at first. If anything, he had been excited that Koyama would be getting more exposure. Up until this drama, Koyama had mainly had the image of being a host and nothing really more than that. YamaPi was convinced that this pairing with Kamenashi would raise his status and show everyone that Koyama really could be an all-around idol and do it all.
It wasn't until a month into the drama filming and all the promotional work for Kx4 that YamaPi realized that in pushing Koyama out into the spotlight, NEWS had lost its Koyama-mama and he had lost his friend. It wasn't supposed to be permanent, he knew that, and yet, the longer Koyama was away gallivanting with Kame, the more and more YamaPi longed for the return of Koyama.
And at the point he was at now, YamaPi didn't even want Koyama to return to NEWS. Greedily, he wanted Koyama all for himself.
Thus why YamaPi was hanging out in the back of the studio now, watching from afar as Kame pushed Koyama around the set in his wheelchair-in the following episode, after Koyama's Ezawa was shot by Jin's Ooyama, it was revealed that the bullet that Ezawa had been shot with rendered him paralyzed from the waist down-as they talked and laughed with each other and the surrounding staff.
YamaPi managed to remain unnoticed for a good ten minutes until someone alerted Kame and Koyama to his presence and the two of them broke off their conversation and looked over in his direction. He awkwardly nodded his head at the two and Kame tried to wave him over onto the set, but YamaPi declined with an uneasy smile and a short shake of his head.
Watching as Kame bent down to whisper something into Koyama's ear, YamaPi's felt his stomach clench at the intimate action. Kame had hardly been friends with Koyama for three months. In comparison, YamaPi had known Koyama for forever. Yet, Kame seemed to be on far more intimate terms with him that YamaPi had ever been. He frowned at the thought.
After listening to what Kame had to say, Koyama immediately stood up from the wheelchair and stepped off the set, heading toward YamaPi. He hadn't been expecting Koyama to come to him, and that alone had YamaPi flustered, rubbing his suddenly sweaty palms against the back of his jeans-anything to keep him looking like the nervous mess he felt like on the inside.
"Yo," Koyama greeted once close enough. "What are you doing here?"
It took a moment for YamaPi to find the words to answer the simple question. "I was around and thought I'd just drop by and check out how everything was going."
"It's going good," Koyama said, leisurely surveying the studio as various members of the staff moved to get things ready for the next scene to be shot. "It's almost over though; I'll miss it."
"You will?" YamaPi blurted out right away. "What about NEWS?"
"Sure I will; this was an amazing experience," Koyama returned. "NEWS will always be there for me, I know that. But this. This was a chance of a lifetime."
"Oh."
YamaPi's lackluster response left the two of them at a silence for a bit, standing side by side-YamaPi confused and unsure if he should say anything at all, and Koyama confidently watching things move around them. It was a strange switching of places that was for sure.
"Hey, YamaPi?"
YamaPi glanced over at Koyama next to him, who seemed to be holding back a grin. "Hmm?"
"Kame already told me, you know," he confessed, and then elaborated. "That you like me."
"What?! Wait. How did he know..." YamaPi trailed off, realizing the answer before Koyama could give it to him. "Jin." All that practice for nothing!
Koyama chuckled. "I get the impression that Jin may have wanted to put you out of your misery; he's a good friend."
"I'm sure he is..." YamaPi muttered, his nervousness toward Koyama slowly being replaced with anger for his best friend.
"You don't have to be jealous of Kame," Koyama finally offered with a soft smile, gently nudging YamaPi in the side with his elbow. "I like you too."
Still sort of stewing in his growing anger for Jin, it took YamaPi a second to register what Koyama had said. Once he had though, that anger dissipated and he found himself feeling like a shy twelve-year old all over again, despite being twice that age and a hugely famous pop idol to boot. "Really?" he asked with wide eyes, biting on his lower lip.
Koyama didn't say anything, but merely nodded his head, still smiling.
YamaPi found himself smiling softly back in return.
the end.
omake (for
maya_morning who is greedy for Kame like that ;P)
"...so we're on stage right? And everything's set up and Tamori-san's about to introduce the performance when suddenly, I hear this loud THUMP next to me. When I look over to where Koyama is, he's not there."
"So what happened?" one of the female staff who had been helping move the hollow set walls around asked.
"I got a little too excited and fell off the stage," Koyama admitted with a light blush and downward cast eyes.
"He fell into the crowd," Kame added with a snicker. "No one was hurt, but I'll be damned if the two girls he fell on didn't look like they were going to pass out because they had actually TOUCHED him."
The small group of drama staff laughed along with Koyama and Kame. "Koyama-san is really popular, isn't he?" a male staffer remarked.
Koyama immediately shook his head. "No, no. Kamenashi-kun is still much more popular than me."
Kame gave a quick jerk on the back of the wheelchair that Koyama was sitting in, startling him. "I told you didn't I?" Kame grinned as Koyama glanced back at him. "Kame. Call me Kame, Koyama."
Koyama bowed his head, rebuked. "Sorry. Bad habits die hard."
As the group of staffers dispersed to go back to their work after listening to Kame's story of Koyama's moment of failure on Music Station, someone rambomly called out, "Hey! Isn't that Yamashita-san over there?"
The two idols automatically turned toward the darkened back of the studio and instantly spotted YamaPi standing near the director's monitors, looking rather uncharacteristically shy. "Huh. I wonder what YamaPi's doing here," Kame muttered, just barely loud enough to be heard by Koyama.
"I have no idea; NEWS doesn't have any work in this area today," Koyama offered as Kame tried to wave YamaPi over, but to no avail.
"You know, I heard something from Jin..." Kame trailed off.
"Oh?" Koyama's voice perked as he looked up at Kame standing next to his wheelchair. "What'd you hear?"
Kame leaned down and whispered into Koyama's ear, insuring that none of the staffers around them would hear. "YamaPi is interested in you. Like that."
Koyama turned on Kame with surprised eyes. "Me? Really?"
Kame nodded, glancing over at the fidgety YamaPi across the studio before looking back down at his co-star. "Yeah. Apparently, he's gotten a little jealous of this Kx4 arrangement and has been trying to figure out how to tell you for some time now."
"And Jin knows because...?"
"Jin is YamaPi's best friend; it's given that he would know. But I think that he's also sick of listening to YamaPi bitch and moan about it too." Kame chuckled behind his hand as he shot another look over at YamaPi, trying to avoid eye contact and giving away that they were indeed talking about him. "Maybe you should go talk to him?"
Koyama nodded, quickly standing up form the wheelchair he had spent the entire morning tooling around the set in. "I think I will."
