First off: Happy birthday to
janglyjewels!! Hope you have a fantastic birthday, filled with Winchestery treats. I personally advise you to pretend that every con and con-related event is being put on specially for your birthday :-)
So the new job happened this week. It's going pretty well for a first week. Lots of paperwork on Tuesday, and then more sitting around reading/assessing their (must learn to say "our") line of books, and a pair in particular that I'll be working on very soon. The woman who started just two weeks before me is already busy, so I imagine it's going to pick up for me soon, too. I hope.
I'm feeling oddly sad and kind of lonely. It's just weird to go from a place I've been for 8 years, where I know 2/3 of the people in the building by name and can stop and chat with 100 or so of them, to a place where I know no one at all. The people in my little group are nice but busy and visually separated from me by a giant wall of file cabinets, so it's very easy for them to forget I'm around. Nobody passes my cube on the way to or from anywhere, so I'm having to take a lot of initiative to interact with them. Again, I'm sure this will improve with time.
Commute is fantastic so far. I love that I can read for half an hour twice a day. Got a good chunk of my chapter for Tuesday's class done yesterday, and will have at it again this morning. The combined 10-block walk isn't doing me any harm, either. Tried it in heels yesterday and had no problems.
I do have to leave home a good half hour earlier than I used to, which is annoying but survivable. And though I'm able to get at my email accounts from there, I haven't been venturing onto LJ yet, and am currently IM-less. I'm trying to get a feel for how seriously people take the hardline put down in the Employee Handbook, which says all the standard things about not DLing new software and using computers for personal purposes. If I suddenly pop up on anyone's IM or LJ midday, you'll know that's changed.
Okay. I guess I'll go put on some pants and get the heck out of here. Rumor has it I will actually speak with an author today.
I really need to work out a new work/job tag. ACRONYMorg? I'll use that for now and consider others as I get to know them better. Let's hope they don't turn out to need to be called EvilOrg.
