Mockingbird soundtrack and "other random stuff" post... A WIP

Aug 21, 2007 22:26

So, yes, as I may have mentioned, I'm a huge dork, to the point that I did, in fact, create an entire soundtrack for my story. And noirbabalon enabled my dorkdom by requesting that I post it now, rather than later. I've been adding onto it since about Chapter 6, and it's now complete.

Under the cut is a tracklist, a link to a zip file containing all the songs, and cover art. The titles of these tracks are vaguely, thematically spoilery. Some of these are awesome but overused and bordering-on-cliched (well, one in particular), others are borderline cheezepoptastic (Maroon 5, anyone?). Some give me the creeps in a really big way, and others make me stupidly weepy. The last one's quite a bit less hopeful than I think the end of the actual story is. I'd be willing to lay money that none of these appear in Dean's cassette tape collection. Anyway. Here it is.

ETA, 9/10/2007: Well, crap. My Yousendit account exceeded its capacity--I've set up a new account and have updated the zip file. I'll see about getting the individual files updated as soon as I can, probably this weekend.

The Whole Shebang in a Zip file

And the cover art:

The link to the zip file only lasts a week at a time. If it's expired and you're interested, poke me for an update.

Other tidbits: I have to get some of my freakish paperwork to a scanner--layout of Leed's Lodge, anyone?--but I do have some pictures that might be interesting,

This is the tattoo on Sam's chest. It sits on his sternum, over his heart chakara, Anahata*, and is related to higher emotion, compassion, love, equilibrium, and well-being. It is related to the thymus, located in the chest. This organ is part of the immune system, as well as being part of the endocrine system. It produces T cells responsible for fighting off disease, and is adversely affected by stress. Symbolised by a lotus with twelve petals.

In my version of it, though I don't say it explicitly, Bobby and Dean alter the design so the star is a pentagram, for some added protection. It probably hurt like a sonofabitch to have done, considering how little padding there is on anyone's sternum, but especially someone with as little body fat as Sam.

And this is the tattoo on his ass. It sits as close to the Root or Base chakra, Muladhara*, as they could get it without castrating the poor boy. It is related to instinct, security, survival and also to basic human potentiality. This centre is located in the region between the genitals and the anus. Although no endocrine organ is placed here, it is said to relate to the inner adrenal glands, the adrenal medulla, responsible for the fight and flight response when survival is under threat. In this region is located a muscle that controls ejaculation in the sexual act. A parallel is drawn between the sperm cell and the ovum, where the genetic code lies coiled, and the kundalini. Symbolised by a lotus with four petals.

In my brain, this tattoo has a side effect that Dean and Bobby didn't exactly predict and that is part of the reason Sam's sex drive is turbo charged. Again, this was probably an incredibly uncomfortable tattoo to have done. In general, I don't think Sam enjoyed his tattooing experience at all, and if he were his old self, he'd probably write a few harshly worded letters about the whole thing.

And, because a) Jem's bookshelves do, of course, bear a striking resemblance to my own, b) as mentioned several times above, I am a ginormous dork, and c) it has been pointed out to me that I'm something of a literary tease, I present the "Mockingbird" Reading List:

Chapters 1-3: I Know This Much Is True, by Wally Lamb
Dean watched them go then opened the book, flipped through a dozen pages of reviews and acknowledgements and crap, and settled on Chapter One, which he read leaning more and more heavily against the doorframe of his and Sam's room, stomach growing cold and hard in his belly, until the crazy twin hacked his own hand off in the public library.
Chapter 2: Cattus Petasatus, by Dr. Seuss, translated by Jennifer Morrish Tunberg, and Terence Tunberg
Dean didn't think The Cat in the Hat was funny in Latin, but Sam would pitch three kinds of a fit if Dean tried to read it in English.
Chapter 3: I Capture the Castle, by Dodie Smith
"No, it's sweet. English girl in the twenties, keeping a journal about her family. Lives in an old castle, first love. Charming. Makes you like people again."
Chapter 4: Cold Sassy Tree, by Olive Ann Burns
"That's a good one. Funny, but a real heartbreaker in spots."
Chapter 4: The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster
"There once was a boy named Milo who didn't know what to do with himself-not just sometimes, but always."
Chapter 6: Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay
Jem paused before she went to wash up, watching him slide the Courtenay novel he'd finished at Tony's back into its place and trail his fingers along the other spines.
Chapter 6: Dancing at the Rascal Fair, by Ivan Doig
Jem pulled his hand into the light that spilled through the door and checked out his selection, arching a brow at the uncannily appropriate choice he'd made and then rising up onto tiptoe to lightly kiss him.
and of course
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
"When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.

ETA: Holy crap. I finished my draft of the second-to-last scene. I have one scene left. And, you know, some significant editing, but--you guys, you guys--holy crap.

ETA again: Also, if anyone has questions about the story and/or backstory, I'd be happy to discuss. I won't spoil anything from unposted chapters, though, so you may get a "no comment" from time to time. If you put the chapter your question relates to in the subject of your comment, then people who might not have gotten that far yet can skim by those comments. Anyway, for what it's worth. Those who hang out around me know that I love to talk about fic and writing in general, and can yammer on--literally for months--about it.
