Top ten signs you're reading a story by hiyacynth1. If Guarnere appears, he goes "Jeezus!" at least once, and probably more. If he is mentioned peripherally, he's mocking someone ( Read more... )

Hmm, that does mean that, doesn't it? What did I mean by that? Hmm. Perhaps I was just trying to be clever. Actually, I probably respect canon the least of any fanfic writer I've ever seen.

I didn't actually think you were spitting at the feet of all other fanfic writers. It just made me think is all.

Enough about me. Let's talk about me for a while.

I think we share a love of linearity.

Again, I blame my journalism training, which took my already-craving-order brain and punished it for being any displays of disorder. My neural pathways are forever marked.

Okay, I have now read all your BoB fic. Time for the gangsta hobbits.

All right then. *puts away "Dead to Me" board*

Should I assume that you're applying that rule we discussed the other night? I can think of at least two you'll hate simply because of the tense I used.

lol. Or, say, four of them. Dang, I seem to use the present tense a lot. Not always in the same voice, though. But still.

I can't hate what I know. I know you, I've actually met you in person, I only hate the personae strangers use on the Internet.

That said, yeah, not a fan of the couple earlier ones, but totally a matter of taste. I am starting to realize that just because I don't like something doesn't necessarily mean it's not good. This is a difficult concept for me to learn, but it seems to fit the evidence.

I did like the Joe Toye one quite a bit, especially the part in the hospital with Wild Bill, and then after the war. I like anything that has to do after the war, but that one was great on its own merits too.

And you know I thought "Ask Marlene" hilarious and, in certain moments, quite touching. And look at you with the intercutting of past/present in that one, Ms. Linear!

To be completely honest, I'm not a big fan of the earlier ones myself. I find, in any fandom, it takes me a while to find my feet. I actually do not acknowledge the existence of the first X-Files story I wrote. Now I've gotten to the stage of understanding my own writing process that I find it academically interesting to look at my earlier stuff and be pleased with my progress.

And yep, I totally hear you on the "to my taste" versus "good" debate, and I appreciate your participation in the debate as well. /diplomatic mutual mastrubation

Ah, I'd love to accept your praise about the intercutting of past and present in a couple of these stories, but I have to point out that even that is done in a very linear way: Each set of scenes proceeds chronologically within its own timeframe. No. There is no hope for me. I'm Linear Girl and always shall be.

Is it bad that I think that's just the best way to tell a story? I mean, sometimes people fuck with it ala Memento and that works, but mostly it just makes it harder to understand what's actually happening. Am I a failure as a thinking writer/reader/audience if I prefer stories to unfold the same way my universe unfolds?

no i'm actually quite with you we must stand together against the forces of chaos rage, rage against the dying of the light together through many ages of the world we have fought the long defeat.

Do I need to start experimenting with drugs or something? /minor bout of existential angst

i will not lose you too.

We stand alone together, dude. And fear not, I'm much too old to develop a drug habit. And if I were truly an alcoholic, I would have drunk the liquors in my cabinet by now, instead of just steadily not buying anything to mix them with. Right?

Oh and I still love "Et Maneat Semper". And not because I gave you the title. But because Skip + Malark + Doc = sadfunnybeautiful always.
