I swear, this day... Started last night with the frustrationfest that was trying to burn most of these songs onto a CD that I could take to work to turn into the final mix found below.
I find it very ironic that finding a bunch of happy music was such a rageful experience. Stupid iTunes wouldn't burn my CDs, but also wouldn't not ruin my blank CDs before deciding to cancel the burn. Four CDs I went through last night, and a bunch of firey hoops today. All with peppy, happy music blaring. And then I brought the wrong stack of CDs to work today. SIGH.
Anyhoo! This mix is dedicated to all those who are suffering from acute July suckitude. It’s giving May a run for its money. And if you’re not ready for peppy, cheery music, I’m also working on a mix of really depressing, angry music. Maybe for next week.
1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles
Gonna try with a little help from my friends.
2. Wash Away - Joe Purdy
I got troubles, Lord, but not today.
‘Cause they gonna wash away. They gonna wash away.
3. Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive - Johnny Mercer
You’ve got to spread joy out to the maximum,
Bring gloom down to the minimum,
Have faith or pandemonium’s libel to walk upon the scene.
4. Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
It seems like years since it’s been clear.
5. Powder Your Face with Sunshine - Dean Martin
The future’s brighter when hearts are lighter
So smile, smile, smile!
6. Things Can Only Get Better - Howard Jones
It may take a little time, a lonely path, an uphill climb
Success or failure will not alter it.
7. Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants
Make a little birdhouse in your soul and while you’re at it
Leave the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul
8. Be My Yoko Ono - Barenaked Ladies
You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go.
9. Getting Better - The Beatles
I have to admit, it’s getting better.
It’s getting better since you’ve been mine.
10. Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps
Ooh, child, things are gonna get easier
Ooh, child, things’ll get brighter
11. No Mermaid - Sinead Lohan
I am no mermaid, and I am no fisherman’s slave.
I am no mermaid, I keep my head above the waves.
12. You’ve Got a Friend - Carole King
Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call
And I’ll be there. You’ve got a friend.
13. Lean on Me - Bill Withers
Lean on me when you’re not strong. And I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on.
For it won't be long til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.
14. Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head - BJ Thomas
The blues they send to meet me won’t defeat me.
It won’t be long til happiness steps up to greet me.
15. Fit as a Fiddle - Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor
Haven’t a worry, haven’t a care!
Feel like a feather, floatin’ on air!
Fit as a fiddle and ready for love!
16. Make My Heart Fly - The Proclaimers
‘Cos I never seem to know the time when you’re with me.
17. I’m Going to Go Back There Someday - Gonzo the Great
There’s not a word yet for old friends who’ve just met.
Part heaven, part space, or have I found my place?
You can just visit, but I plan to stay.
I’m going to go back there someday.
18. Babylon - David Gray
If you want it, come and get it, for cryin’ out loud.
The love that I was givin’ you was never in doubt.
19. Blackbird - The Beatles
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see.
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.
20. Gonna Buy Me a Dog - The Monkees
You used to keep me so contented
But I can teach a dog to do that.
21. For Pete’s Sake - The Monkees
In this generation, in this loving time
In this generation, we will make the world shine.
Epilogue... Because for some, gloomy apocalyptic songs are happy tidings of the End Times!
22. Santa Monica - Everclear
We can live beside the ocean, leave the fire behind.
Swim out past the breakers and watch the world die.
Phew!! Well timed, though. We got the first rejection from the batch of query letters we sent out Monday. Two-day rejection letters--no waiting!
Love to all my friends, and especially to those who are going through tough times.
