Today was a weird day.
So since surgery I have lab work done every three months to monitor nutrition and other levels in my body. After any kind of weight loss surgery your body has less opportunity to process the nutrients in your food, and because you have to concentrate on protein that can throw things off even more. Last time my results came back not great. Even though I've felt TONS better than my friend who had surgery the same day I did, for her follow up she is going to see the nutrition guy and I have to see the surgeon himself. I know this only because I overheard him telling the nurse to make sure I saw him personally. I assumed this was so he can monitor my progress. She had NO flags on her lab results, and I had several. Even though none of them were far from normal levels, so I don't think it could have been THAT bad.
Anyway, my six month eval is coming up, so I went in for blood work last week. I go to my normal doctor for the blood work even though the orders come from my surgeon. My doctor's office called me yesterday and said that my doctor wanted to see me immediately to discuss my blood work. I told them that I have a follow up with my surgeon on Monday, but she said I had to come see Dr White anyway. I said fine, and made the appointment for this afternoon. That in itself was a sign that they were taking it seriously, because normally it takes weeks to make an appointment to see him. I told the nurse I was coming in to pick up a copy of my results, but when I showed up she came out to tell me they weren't going to just GIVE me the results, that I had to see Dr White so he could discuss them with me. I wasn't feeling good anyway and I was starting to get pissed off, so I told her I did the exact same labs three months ago and picked up them up the day the results came in. She ARGUED with me. I argued right back. Finally she said "So we just GAVE you results that we ordered without discussing them at all?" I said, "YOU didn't order them. Dr. Stowers did." She said, "Hmm. I'm going to have to check on that." And then she walked away. I wanted to say, "Bitch PLEASE. Why would I lie??" But I didn't. She came back in, handed me the results, and then left without another word.
I almost canceled right then, because I realized she didn't even know that her office hadn't ordered the labs. But I didn't, partially because I was freaked out about potentially bad results and partially because I've been fighting a head cold for three weeks. I thought at the very least I could get some antibiotics or something. So I kept the appointment. And here's where it gets weird.
First off, Bad Ass Bad Attitude Nurse takes me back. Turns out I have her daughter IN MY CLASS. And she went from being Bad Ass Bad Attitude to Butter Wouldn't Melt in Her Mouth. She was all over me, how much her daughter talks about me all the time, loves my class, how her younger daughter who is in kindergarten talks about wanting to be in my class. Which, by the way, is patently untrue. Kindergartners don't say stuff like that, believe me. It was a very uncomfortable few minutes because I knew she was just blowing smoke up my ass.
Then Dr White comes in. I haven't seen him in some time. He is not just my family doctor, but he is literally everyone in my family's doctor. I've known him for several years. He is the one that diagnosed me with diabetes, and he gave me a goal weight then. I am currently almost 20 lbs less than that goal weight. He told me how great I looked, how proud he was of me, a bunch of really nice stuff. He told me my numbers were GREAT. My potassium was the only thing he really had concern about because it was a little low. He told me to eat a banana every day and that would take care of it. PFFT.
Then he looked in my ears and nose and mouth and told me I had an ear infection on the left side, sinus infections, and infection in my throat. He said he wanted to give me a combined shot of steroids and antibiotics and then prescribe cough syrup and more antibiotic. And then here's where it got even weirder. He started talking to me about BIRTH CONTROL. Apparently the one antibiotic pill is so strong that it will diminish the effectiveness of the pill. I said that wouldn't be a problem. He asked me what I was using, and I said nothing right now. And he started going ON and ON about it. Said I was a pretty girl, and guys tend to get excited around pretty girls, and it only takes ONE SPERM to make a baby, and a guy is going to be sending several million of them my way...y'all, I don't know what he was thinking but no matter how many times I told him that either (a) it wasn't a problem right now and that (b) I knew how to take care of it if and when, he just kept talking. I've been seeing him on and off for at least 7 or 8 years. Does he think losing all this weight means less brain cells?
Although given how easily I got played by the SOB, I guess there's some room for discussion there. Hmmmm.
Anyway, that was weird part the second. Weird part the third came when the same MOM OF MY STUDENT came in to give me the shot. I wore a sweater dress and black tights today, so I basically had to moon her in order for her to give it to me. I said something to that effect, and she laughed and said she looked at heinie's all day long so it wasn't any big deal. ARGH. You don't look at your child's teacher's heinie all day long! And your child's teacher sure isn't used to showing to you!! For the most part, I keep my heinie under wraps!
Very very strange day.
