[ dream 2] 初夢 childhood, like a bird's trembling heart

Jan 22, 2010 01:25

[Warning] it's all fluff.
[dream effect; optional] you can feel the little bone heating up against your chest.

[It's little!Watanuki, walking home in the rain. Things are looking pretty normal, so far; he has an umbrella and is happily twirling it. Possibly tangently related to his future neuroses, child-Wata resists the temptation of leaping into puddles, lightly stepping into them instead. The street is empty, it's only him and the muted sound of birds and wind. Until he looks down.

The reflection the puddle is giving back is odd at best; it definitely is Watanuki, though, but...facing the wrong way. The reflection's heels are where Watanuki's toes are; shocked, Watanuki steps backwards and his reflection steps forward, away form him. Chills go up and down his spine, and not from the cold. There is a sharp heat that flares up in his breast pocket, and warms his chest.

"Hey, Kimihiro, it's okay."

He looks up, startled, coming face-to-face with a boy with a neat bowl cut the likes of which most children rue. Watanuki's spirits go from grim to delighted in a flash.

"It's you!"

He races up to see his friend, his school bag thump-thump-thumping against his back, and stops a step away from the other boy. His grin is so bright it's as if the sun was never gone. Hesitantly, he reaches into his breast pocket and pulls out--a knuckle bone. "I never thanked you," he begins, "but it protects me," he confides in the other child, who reacts with a pleased smile.

"I'm happy, then. But that isn't why I'm here--take this!"

From behind him--where, exactly, is beyond human understanding--the boy pulls out an exceedingly large eggplant.

Watanuki blinks.

Suddenly, the bone is dust in his hands and he's a teenager again and so is his friend, who's still grinning wickedly. Watanuki splutters. The street is dry and sunny and around them, blurry-faced people are milling about.

"A-a-an eggplant? You came all the way into my dream to give me an eggplant?"

"The first dream of the New Year--I wanted it to be lucky." The boy explains, and Watanuki rolls his eyes. He grabs the offending vegetable with a huff.

His friend crosses his arms lightly. Now that the sun is out, his white shirt seems crisp and neat against his pale skin. Watanuki wonders, briefly, if ghosts do laundry.

"Still--it's good to see you again," Watanuki finally offers. His friend nods, but it's a bit sad.

"I'm sorry, I--"

"I know. You have to...go back."

"Yeah."

A breeze blows by and the boy becomes transluscent, dissolving into the air.]

[Watanuki wakes, blinking blearily, and grabs the Dreamberry. He appears to be scanning the images.]

Well, that was odd...

[He shuts off the feed.]
