When Clockwork had first appeared to Clow those nine months ago and told him what was going to happen Clow had been surprised. As a general rule a person didn’t read their own fortunes…it was a great burden to know your future and while Clow could see his own spread out before him he didn’t know what led to what or how it all linked together. For him it was like seeing buildings rising up on the horizon…you didn’t know what street led to which building but you knew they were coming up.
Now, while he knew what he had to do, it didn’t make it any easier. Seeing the boy had made it all the harder, the child was a symbol of their love. He couldn’t help but contemplate the magic they could teach him…the great things that their child could accomplish. Yuuko had rambled on about their baby for the past nine months now, daydreaming about how powerful he would become. How was he supposed to tell her…that they had to give that up?
The spirit frowned, he knew how hard this was going to be on Clow and Yuuko but he also knew it had to be done. He remembered as a kid, growing up and wishing for parents…it was a cruel irony that he realized now…it was his own fault he had grown up without them. Clockwork wondered briefly if time would honestly change that much if he just left now…without his human self but shook such thoughts from his head, this had to be done, “You know what I’m here for.”
Clow’s smile stayed plastered on his face. While Clockwork hid his true emotions behind a frown, Clow Reed usually hid his feeling behind a half hearted smile, “Yes…but don’t you think you should talk to your mother about it first?”
“I already have,” Clockwork answered vaguely.
“No…you WILL speak with her…stop trying to confuse your father…I know just as much about how time works for you as you do,” Clow chided, turning the handle of the door behind him and walking back into the room.
Clockwork highly doubted that but couldn’t bring himself to argue with him, he knew this wasn’t going to end well but it had to be done, so he followed Clow into the room. His eyes softened as he saw Yuuko resting in bed, Toki nuzzled into her breast as she fed him.
Yuuko’s eyes shot up as she felt the powerful presence enter the room, it made her go cold and she knew it was a spirit. Clow gave her a reassuring smile, letting her know that the visitor meant no harm. She relaxed but kept fierce, red eyes focused on the ghost, sizing him up and wondering what he wanted. “Hello.”
The Master of Time pulled back his hood, his white bangs falling into his red eyes and covering his scar; there was always something about Yuuko that ate at his heart. A sad yearning lingering in him to be with her mixed with a deep resentment that she had given him up and yet he couldn’t blame her because it was his own fault; he floated over to the woman’s bed, rubbing the back of his neck, the thoughts and nervous habits remnants of his time as a human and he knew he would never be able to shake them. “Hello.”
Clow positioned himself on Yuuko’s other side. He knew it was time to tell Yuuko the story…tell her who this spirit was, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Clow adjusted his glasses and kept his eyes on Toki; the sole anchor amongst the storming emotions around him, “Yuuko this is Clockwork. He’s a very dear person to me and I thought you would like to meet him…you two work in the same area after all.”
Yuuko raised an eyebrow; she could sense that Clow was leaving out certain details but she knew pushing him wasn’t going to help matters. She extended a hand to Clockwork, “A pleasure to meet you…this is our son…Kinmuno Toki.”
Clockwork nodded, his grip on his time staff tightening. He couldn’t bring himself to say anything. It was too hard, too much of a burden. It had happened already, had happened a long time ago, so why was it still so hard? He took a deep breath, “There…is something you need to know…about your son.”
The witch tensed, Toki pulling away from her breast and going back to sleep. She frowned and pulled her clothing back up to conceal her bosom. Her eyes locked on Clockwork’s; there was something familiar about him…his eyes…his aura…everything. She looked him up and down and then turned to Clow, a glaring look that pierced through him, “What haven’t you told me?”
He took a deep breath, adjusting his glasses again; this was going to take a LOT of explaining, “Well, Yuuko the thing is…”
“Yes?”
“The thing is…Clockwork…is Toki.”
A silence fell over the room as Yuuko looked from the newborn in her arms to the ghost hovering by her bed. She scowled and looked back to Clow, “Okay…but why has he come to visit now?”
Clockwork sighed, this was going to take all day at the rate they were going, “I’ve come for Toki…he belongs in another time.”
She glared at him, “No.”
“Yuuko…you can’t change this…Toki will be better off in another time.”
“No,” she said again, arms tightening around the newborn, shielding him from the two men who seemed adamant on taking her precious child from her.
Clow gave Clockwork an apologetic look, he wondered how hard this was going to be to witness for the ghost, “Maybe you should step outside while I talk with her?” Clockwork gave the man an exasperated look but complied with his request and floated out of the room.
“I am not giving up my child Clow!”
“Yuuko, we have to, it’s the only way.”
She glared at him, “I won’t accept that…I CAN’T accept that!”
The magician leaned forward, taking Yuuko’s chin in his hand, she tried to pull away but he kept her eyes locked on his, “Yuuko…I know I should have told you sooner…but you have to listen to me now.” He felt her resisting but he held her still, “This is the hardest thing for a mother to do, I realize that, but Yuuko you have to understand that this is what HAS to be done…there is no other way.”
He could see the tears in her eyes, the tears he knew she would never shed in public…not even around him, “Why did you keep this from me?”
Clow averted his gaze, Yuuko’s accusing stare bringing him more pain than anything, “I couldn’t tell you Yuuko…you never would have listened to me until now.” He glanced back to her, a sad look in his eyes, “I thought maybe we could avoid it…cheat time somehow…but now I realize we can’t…it’s inevitable.”
“I had so many plans for him…I don’t want to give that up Clow,” she said in a soft voice.
“I know…but you can still get to know him…after all you’re still around in the time Clockwork is taking him too,” Clow released his hold on her face as Yuuko turned away.
“Isn’t it cruel for Clockwork to have to do this…if he is Toki…that means he’s bringing this on himself?”
“Apparently none of my descendants are allowed to be happy,” Clow said sadly, turning away from Yuuko.
She sighed and got out of bed, lying her child down in his crib, “I have a feeling you will both make other people happy though.” She smiled down at her baby, “Call him back in…we might as well get this over with.”
