Title: Beneath Our Feet Prompt: Earth Kingdom Funerals Character: Suki, unnamed Kyoshi Warrior [oc] Rating: PG Notes: set several years pre-series; about 10 yrs maybe Word Count: 452 --- While the island of Kyoshi shared many similarities in custom with the dilapidated Water Tribe to the south there was one tradition that had continued with them after they had broken off ties with the Earth Kingdom centuries ago. The rituals and traditions associated with the burial of the dead are sacred in most cultures and this was true, even of the people of the Earth Kingdom. Due to their close ties to the earth itself most people of that nation deemed that when they died they would be buried beneath the ground. It was the ultimate form of 'oneness' in their culture and while the Earth Kingdom was vast and diverse, there was still a unity when it came to this particular tradition.
The young girl standing over the grave was not thinking about this however. She was standing straight and sobbing openly as the body was lowered slowly into the tomb that had been dug out of the ground. Suki had never known her mother (having died from giving birth to Suki) so the young girl had grown up with her father on the tiny Earth Kingdom island. He had been her whole world at the age of six and now he was gone forever, returning from the earth from whence he came. He had taught her to be strong and not back down. This was why she was standing so straight; but at the age of six, when you realize how alone you are in the world; it is very hard to not cry.
Suki sobbed and the few villagers who had come to attend the funeral gave her the space she needed. They knew how hard this was for her but what could they do but watch? A young woman, wearing the ceremonial robes of the famed Kyoshi Warriors watched this girl standing upright despite her pain and saw a strength there that could have rivaled Kyoshi herself. The young woman stepped forward, placing a hand on Suki's shoulder. The warrior said nothing but Suki spun on her heel and immediately embraced her, sobbing into the green robes. "It will be okay small one," the woman said in a kind voice that contradicted the fierce persona she usually kept up, "he will always be a part of you and now a part of this island. He will watch over you all ways." She paused, moving her hand to the girl's head, "As will I." The girl looked up at the woman, eyes still streaming with tears, and then nodded.
