For the past several months I have been absolutely giddy about getting a chance to work with the Alvin submersible. The only thing that has kept me from calling WHOI daily to check in on the status of the interview schedule is that they had repeatedly assured me that they'd contact me when they made the decision, whether it was in my favor or not. Well it had been more then a month since I last called and 3 weeks after they had said they'd start going through resumes. I was getting antsy despite their reassurances and gave them a call today.
Turns out they "have already selected a candidate for the position". It must either mean that someone's kid got the job today or what I think is more likely that they started interviewing people 3 weeks ago on schedule and my resume didn't even warrant a courtesy call let alone an interview. I think I need to make a trip to Woods Hole some time this summer and stop in to talk to someone specifically to get my name in.
Also, I figure I have some decent resume re-working to do.
In the mean time I'm delving further into my electronics hobby and trying to crank out a working version of the gradiometer project I started last year. I hope to have something to brag about related to underwater research next time a job comes up.
