I went back to work tonight to do some etching on an acrylic sheet I had. I was cleaning some of the threads on the tool holder I was intending to use. I had my hand in a rag and was using my fingernail to push the rag into the threads. Spin the tool holder and you get clean threads. Turns out that there was a long metal sliver pressed into the side of one of the threads. I spun the tool holder and drove this long and very thin piece of hardened steel into the tip of my index finger. Of course I yanked my hand back and was fortunate enough to pull straight back along the sliver. I yanked the rag away and there was allready blood dripping around the back side of my fingernail. I thought I tore half of my fingertip off to get that much blood that fast. Of course with a wound in the shop you squeeze the area to drive out coolant, oil, and whatever cocktail of chemicals we're playing with that day. When I did the blood shot out in a nice thin stream and landed on the floor about 5 feet away.
My first thought was "Oh Shit!".
Followed immediately by "That was kinda cool"
So I walked over to the sink and started squeezing my finger in the same manner as one milks a cow. Spraying thin streams of blood all over the back wall of the basin. It was actually pretty cool. After about a minute it slowed down and stopped as the platelets clogged the wound.
Best I can figure the sliver went in straight, hit an arteriole and pulled out straight enough to leave a thin and round hole. I couldn't have lost more then a milliliter of blood and I don't really want to do that again (it did hurt), but I was terribly amused for a few minutes.
