♠ ♠ ♠

For the very first time in his life- excluding timed he’d spent with Jjong- he felt safe.
He had his almost own room with no Doojoon in it. His coworkers were trustworthy ad nice- at least for now. Taemin was incredibly empathetic and understanding. He almost never asked Kibum any questions- when he would do it though, they’d be cagey. Kibum felt liked, accepted, and appreciated by his young boss.
And then, there was Junho. A very nice, heartwarming guy with an odd sense of humour, sometimes laughing at his own jokes, always screwing his eyes cutely and baring his white teeth while doing so. He was vivid and authentic- most of all he was authentic. It was impossible not to read emotions on his face; he didn’t wear a mask, he wasn’t a good actor when it came to lying, pretending. His eyes would give him away just anytime.
They gave him away when Kibum noticed a young woman visiting their coffee shop every once in a while. She was relatively short, but always wore some really stylish high-heels so that she was of perfect height. She moved nimbly, with grace and so much confidence that it only doubled her sex appeal. Her face always held the most perfect make-up one could imagine, her honey hair was long, wavy, her smile discreet, sweet and enticing. Kibum had no experience in this field, but he was sure any woman would kill to have her body, to look like her, to move like her. She was a walking perfection and a role model for any girl. A perfectly perfect woman.
A perfect, beautiful woman that poor Junho was always looking at with such hope and vulnerability that it made Kibum’s insides churn. And it made him want to punch the perfect blind idiot in her perfect pretty face.
If she ever looked at Junho, it would be a short, seemingly-shy look, a quick glance when she’d tear her gaze off the newest fashion magazine she’d be engulfed in. Nothing more than that. Sometimes, she’d also smile at him, with her small, polite, charming smile that could weaken any man’s knees.
But she was smiling like that and sending such looks everyone she’d come to contact with; she’d smile that way at Kibum, at Taemin, at any customer that would disturb her. She was so polite and so closed that it hurt.
It hurt because no matter how hard Junho tried, Kibum could always tell how he yearned to talk to the woman whenever she’d come to their shop. It was killing both of them inside.
One day, when Junho was way too distracted to consider his behaviour normal and not disordered by some certain woman’s recent disappearance, Kibum stood next to him, helping him in cleaning dishes.
“She’s nice” he said, somewhat straight-forwardly, noticing how the latter’s body went stiff.
“… who is?” he asked, his voice sounding so small and unsure. Kibum sighed.
“That woman that you ogle every time she comes in. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind. And, as I said, she is nice. So you should just-“
“You don’t really think that” Junho suddenly interrupted and grinned amusedly at him. Kibum felt confused.
“… what?”
“I can see your hatred gaze digging knifes into her, anytime she comes in” Junho explained, chuckling lightly.
“It’s not a- okay, it is, but- hey, so you know which woman I’m talking about! That means I can’t be wrong with that one!” Kibum concluded, making the boy next to him laugh out loud.
I like his laugh.
“Well, if you want me to admit it that badly… yeah, you’re not wrong, I am sort of ogling her, but it’s not what you think” he finally said, wiping his eyes with his fingers, letting out short giggles every once in a while.
I like how he laughs with all his heart.
“Not what I think? And what do I think, Mr. I-know-everything?” Kibum continued, tilting his head, and finding the conversations with Junho surprisingly easy and pleasant.
“Well, for one, you certainly don’t like the fact that I’m paying attention to her, it’s not like I don’t see your rea-“
“How would you see my reactions if you’re ogling her twenty-four-seven?” Kibum cut him playfully, wiping his hands in a towel.
“Well, while you’re looking at her, I’m sort of looking at you” he shrugged, hopefully not noticing the dumbfounded expression painted on the latter’s face “and, continuing what we’d started- it’s not ogling in sense of… you know… checking out a whore for a one-night-stand or something. I’m too sensitive for anonymous sex. And she, she just intrigues me. I’ve always wanted to-“
But Kibum didn’t hear what Junho wanted to, because his mind caught the key word that would open a long-ago-closed-but-apparently-not-forever part of his brain that kept his memories about his past life.
He didn’t let himself ponder on that too much though, he loathed those memories, instead he turned to Junho again, though now his voice became a bit distant, not exactly as hyper as a moment ago.
Why can’t I get rid of this sensibility. I’m out of it already.
“Then why don’t you try to meet her?”
Junho’s smile turned to a sad one.
“I… we’re from two absolutely different leagues. I’d never stand a chance to be her man. I’m just a worker of a coffee shop. No one important enough to consider myself worthy her companion” he said, making Kibum scoff and roll his eyes, though he wasn’t as irritated as just simply hurt.
And, at the same time, incredibly anxious. Junho just said what he himself would say if someone would ask him why he’d left Jjong.
just a worker of a coffee shop. No one important enough to consider myself worthy her companion
no one important enough to consider myself worthy
“Let’s get back to work” Kibum quietly said, averting his gaze from Junho.
He could’ve comforted him, say something like “you have to try anyway, stupid” or “of course you’re worthy of her, why the hell not?!”.
But he didn’t, for the first time not wanting to lie to make someone feel better.
Because Junho was just like him. And Kibum knew he himself wouldn’t want to hear such a lie.

Kibum knew that coincidences could be quite surprising and really unexpected. Well, he still remembered how Jjong found him in the exactly the same spot he’d found him for the first time so many years ago. He also couldn’t get rid of the memory of Mr. Park working in the same place as he did.
Still, despite all that, he’d never suspected those two guys to visit the coffee shop.
He swore his heart stopped for a moment when he heard a voice he used to hear pretty much every day in so many long years of his life.
“… Key?! Is that… oh my God, is that you?”
For a moment, he didn’t dare to move his eyes up from the counter, believing it was only his imagination or maybe a beginning of some kind of schizophrenia.
But then he swallowed, sighed deeply “Key, oh God, I can’t believe it, it’s really you baby” and slowly raised his head.
A bit more fit, with skin tanned a bit more than usual, with clothes a bit more matching to his character, he was already rushing behind the counter, not giving a damn about the confused looks that other customers sent him.
It took five seconds from the first exclamation to the feeling of still-rather-skinny-but-firm arms circling around his neck, holding him close as the guy hid his face in the crook of Kibum’s neck and sighed. A moment later Kibum felt wet moisture wetting his neck.
Always such a crybaby… he never grew up…
“Oh, God, Key… how I missed you… how we all missed you…”
Kibum’s hands loosened their grip on Junsu’s waist.
“We?” he asked, a sudden tension and suspicion added to his voice.
We all love you, Key
How I missed your sweet fuckable mouth
You’re our lovely little whore
“Key, I thought… damn, I thought you were dead…” more tears and more sobs.
Kibum patted his trembling back somehow soothingly though he couldn’t say he was delighted by the sudden guest.
Or guests, if we count a very handsome, tall guy standing still at the door, with a totally dumfounded reflection, as he watched the guy he once raped.
“I’ll handle it, you go to your room, Kibum” Junho’s voice made Kibum freeze for a moment; he forgot that the other boy was in the kitchen or anywhere nearby for that matter. He nodded and pulled away from Junsu.
“Come inside” he said, grabbing the other’s wrist and pulling him inside. He waited for the second guy to come in as well, but he remained motionless and shocked, so Kibum didn’t waste any time in closing the door and returning his full attention to his past co-worker.

“So you eloped to that regular client of yours that you’ve known since you were a child?
What were you doing all that time?
Did you want to kill yourself?
Why did you leave him?”
Kibum talked around all those questions patiently, knowing that Junsu was always honestly caring about him, he owed him at least a solid explanation. He did feel sorry for him for a moment, thinking of his conviction that Kibum committed suicide- but the more they talked, the more time he spent looking in those eyes he remembered in totally different circumstances, the more fed up and insecure he felt.
“You should… I mean… you know, after you left, we lost so many clients…”
Kibum quirked an eyebrow.
“Oh? And?”
“And,” Junsu swallowed, looking away “I think that if the boss would see you, he’d just kill you… but on the other hand, he’d do anything to bring you back.”
“No way. Never. I’m starting my life from new. I want the past to stop haunting me, once for good” he replied, maybe a bit too harshly, judging by the flash of hurt crossing Junsu’s features.
“I mean… it’s not about you, Junsu. But I want to leave it behind, to move on, to stop having those nightmares finally. I’m managing pretty well as far, you know?” he chuckled somewhat bitterly, and then his laughter died, as Junsu’s expression was still unreadable.
“Yeah… I guess…”
“Look, if you had someone, would you still want to get laid with others for money?”
“I… I don’t anymore…” Junsu replied shyly, his eyes meeting Kibum’s.
What…
“You mean, you don’t work there anymore?” he asked incredulously.
“I, no, since I and Kiki got together, I don’t anymore, no.” there was finally happiness painted on his face, but confusion on Kibum’s for change.
“Kiki.”
“Yeah, Kiki. We… met after you left and I, let’s say I wanted to help him. He really liked that guy you chased, you know” he nodded, licking his bottom lip nervously. “Now we’re together and I know I can trust him with my whole heart, but… sometimes I go back to those times, and… I wish I didn’t remember…”
“You see now why I hate looking into the past” Kibum cut him shortly. Junsu understood.
“It was amazing to see you again. I’ll be leaving now.”
Kibum nodded and extended his arms so that the other melted in his embrace.
“It’ll be better this way.”
Junsu sighed heavily and hummed.
“Ah, and tell Kikwang that I forgave him a long time ago. I wish you both happiness.”
Junsu sobbed at those words. Kibum held him some more.

“Was he your good friend, Key?”
Kibum turned from the door where he said his last goodbye to Junsu (Kiki was already outside, probably unable to stand the probable tension) and faced Junho, with crossed arms and interested expression on his face.
“Don’t call me that, please. And no, he wasn’t. he’s just a shadow from the past.” he replied grudgingly and walked towards the counter to return to work. But Junho was insistent.
“He didn’t look like just a shadow to me.”
Kibum put dirty mugs to the dishwater.
“Junho, it’s really not something I’d like to talk about. He’s the past. I’m now here. Starting anew. Don’t ask me about my past, please.”
He could feel how the other boy went stiff at his words. Maybe his voice sounded too harsh, too annoyed. But he needed to shield himself. He couldn’t let the others know about the real him.
The real, apparently not-yet-forgotten him.
He hated himself when he heard Junho’s quiet “okay”, he hated to hear that cold quiver in his voice.
You mustn’t know Junho. Nobody can ever know.

One day, Taemin decided that they should take a group picture of themselves.
“We need to commemorate our new line-up. Besides, Kibum-hyung needs to have something nice to hang on his wall, and what would be nicer than our dumb faces?”
The photo was taken by a customer. The customer, actually. Kibum nudged Junho to walk up to his perfect crush and ask her to take the photo. The older boy complied, swallowing nervously, his hands sweating and trembling. He politely asked the woman to take the picture, stammering while doing so, and she smiled her graceful smile, stood up and took the camera in her hands.

The photo contained a shy but smiling Kibum in the middle (though he protested), grinning Taemin on his left, with a hand on Kibum’s left shoulder, and a suddenly-confident Junho on his right, his arm circled around Kibum’s waist. Behind them, on a stool, there stood Shindong, a baker that always brought them the best muffins.

Kibum could consider hanging this photo on his wall, but he had a different idea for it besides that.
“Boss… I mean, Taemin-shi… could I have two copies of this photo?”
The photos were ready the day after, handed to the co-workers. One of them was hung behind the counter.
Kibum got his two copies. He took one of them, scribbled something on the back of it. Then, he asked Junho to show him the way to the nearest post office. He got the directions, went there, bought an enveloped, wrote the address on it- just the recipient’s address, nothing else- put the photo inside and sent it.
He hadn’t felt that carefree and joyful in weeks.
