pectus_pectoris When Lambo crashed landed in Sawada Tsunayoshi's life aged five, armed with an infinite supply of hand grenades and dreams of becoming the world's greatest hitman, he never expected to spend the next ten years being kicked around by a sadistic Arcobaleno and cowering behind his seniors in battles he could neither understand nor have a hope of defending himself in. He certainly never asked to repeatedly put his life on the line to defend the Vongola Tenth from an array of insane criminals either (although it does give him an impressive array of stories to brag about to his old family back in Italy).
Similarly I-pin, who had just begun training under master Fong and dreamt of being an assassin never imagined she'd be working as a ramen delivery girl ten years down the line. Going to university had never been high on the agenda either but now it looms in front of her, dominating her future. It's not that she doesn't enjoy her studies, it's just they can never give her the thrill that fighting alongside Tsuna and his crazy family did. On the rare nights when she isn't working I-pin ventures out to do her bit for society by practicing her martial arts skills on petty criminals, just for old time's sake. It's not the same. Not really.
When Lambo ups and leaves for Italy with Tsuna and the other guardians I-pin feels like she's losing half of herself. After their catastrophic first meeting (which consisted of Lambo humiliating her to the point that her Pinzu Time Bomb nearly destroyed half of Namimori) they became inseparable partners in crime. Even later when Fuuta joined the family and two became three, they still retained a special bond. Or so she thought until Lambo waltzed off to the other side of the world without a care for his so-called best friend. Deep down I-pin knows she's being irrational. Lambo has a duty as Tsuna's guardian: where his boss leads, Lambo is bound to follow. She is breaking though, and it's far easier to rant and rail at Lambo, to blame him for causing her to hurt, than it is to accept that he's not coming back and there's nothing she can do to change that.
Lambo misses I-pin like burning. The other guardians are fun enough to be around but they still treat him like a child and he longs for someone his own age to talk to. He misses her gentle scolding and her quiet calmness, her mischievous side which no-one else sees. Lambo knows full well that she blames him for leaving and, while the injustice rankles, Lambo can't bear the thought that she's hurting because of him. He fervently hopes that I-pin will move over to Italy to join the family once she's finished university. Realistically though, he knows she will make a bunch of new best friends and forget all about him before too long. Lambo thinks that might just kill him.
One day, not long after Lambo's seventeenth birthday, he comes home late from training, sweaty and exhausted to find a ridiculously graceful, mature I-pin fast asleep on his doorstep and it takes a few moments for Lambo to pinch himself and ascertain that yes, he is awake and yes, she is really there. Later, when I-pin lies beside him and explains that university didn't agree with her and that she plans to complete her training as an assassin for the Vongola family, Lambo can't help thinking that all the shattered hopes and dreams have been blown away by the overwhelming rightness of this moment.
