Flicker

It’s not so much that he delights in watching them suffer. It’s not so much that he’s cruel.

It’s that he’s lost the ability to feel, over time; the numbness seeping in and turning solid, turning dark. It’s the fact that, even in despair, he can watch the passion rise in them, watch it boil and bleed with colors he’s forgotten, with a warmth he’s long surrendered to the depths of the sea.

The depths of eyes like the sea.

So it’s not that he’s cruel, really. It’s more that the flicker reminds him what he’s fighting for; clinging to.

The flicker, every time, reminds him of home.
