False Equivalency

Apr 13, 2014 07:21

A Public Service Announcement from your Friendly Neighborhood Leftist Kitty:

Giving money to Political Group A and giving money to Political Group B are only equivalent until you look at the political goals of said groups.

Suppose that group A has as its political goal, its raison d'être, the prevention of certain people from engaging in activities that (to quote Thomas Jefferson) neither break legs nor pick pockets.

Suppose that group B's goal is to defend the right of all people, even unpopular ones, to engage in such activities.

It is then a false equivalency to claim that supporting one group is the same as supporting another.

[Edited to correct subject-verb agreement resulting from mid-sentence restructuring.]
