“OK, guys?” Fifteen year-old Anna sighed as she flopped down into the grass next to the twins. “I’m not so sure this is such a good idea.”
Eleven year-old Nate and Luke were done up in full blown Ghostbusters costumes. The costumes were pretty much verbatim what was sold in the store with the exception of one thing. They had, since leaving Mama’s with Anna to go trick-or-treating, switched out the blow-up backpacks that come with the costume for ones they had bought at a prank shop, set up to be loaded silly string.
The boys had loaded them with spray cheese.
The three of them were now hiding out in the bushes that ran along between Mama’s boarding house, and the house next door, and Anna wasn’t quite sure why they were doing this, but since she had promised to take the boys trick-or-treating, so if she heading back inside with no boys to be found-their cover would be blown. And for what they had planned, they couldn’t afford a blown cover. So Anna had now found herself a participant, whether she was willing or not. And she was still not yet convinced on the merit of this particular operation, but she really didn’t see what choices she had at this point.
“He deserves it-”
“-he steals from Mama all the time-”
“-and then he goes and blames it on one of us-”
“-or the dog, and he’s always poking around in the woods-”
“-and we need to show him who’s boss so that he’ll leave Mama alone-”
“-or else he’ll never learn.”
Anna sighed heavily. She agreed that Mr. Murony had it coming-he had been doing what he was doing for too long not to. But there had to be a less-messy-way to go about this. “I still don’t think spray cheese is the way to go.”
“Well-it was what was available.”
“I see.”
“Plus-it makes a good mess.”
“That it does.”
“Shhh-here he comes!”
The three of them dropped into silence, watching as a pair of fancy Italian leather shoes made their way across the paved driveway. Anna turned in surprise as she was handed a leathery feeling mask, and watched as the twins pulled their own masks down over their faces. She sighed again, before doing the same, taking the can of spray cheese offered to her, and getting into more of a crouching position. If she was going to have to be involved, she might as well be involved.
The twin on her right-she wasn’t sure which one he was at this point-gave a silent count down of three, two one-
Anna doesn’t remember much exactly of what happened-she couldn’t really see through the mask, and the latex plasticy smell of the mask blocked out most everything else. All she knows was after about five minutes of spraying there was a loud shout of “RUN!” and she and the twins were bolting down the street. They got about a block away before they stopped to catch their breath, and once they had, the twins were off again.
“That was so totally awesome-”
“-did you see the look on his face?-”
‘-we totally got him!”
“Boys!” Anna sighed, cutting them off before they could ramble on any more. “Do you think he knew it was us?”
“No way!-”
“-how could he know we were totally careful-”
“-yeah, totally, there’s no way he could figure it out.”
“So what are we going to do?” Anna asked. “We can’t head back home now.”
The twins reached into their pockets and pulled out two rolled up pillowcases. They took their masks off, and dropped them into the bags, and Nate grabbed Anna’s and stuffed it in along with his. The blond boy then looked up at her with a grin.
“Now-we go trick-or-treating.”
