Wayward verse

Ben had asked Jesse to drop him off a few blocks from Mama's house, and planned to hoof it the rest of the way. He had a seabag over his shoulder and a baseball cap over his eyes. Jeans, boots and a flannel shirt; everything about him looked like how he had felt once upon a time. The perfect beach tan under the clothes betrayed the midwestern look he was trying to play off, but part of him just felt better this way.

He walked up the driveway on his own, knowing that someone in the house was probably already aware that he was approaching. But he kept going, then dropped the bag and knocked on the door. He probably could have just walked in, but it had been awhile now since Ben had visited and he didn't want to step over any boundaries that had been put up while he was gone.

Mama was making cake.

Not that this wasn't standard for all birthdays, but when it's your own birthday, you appreciate it a little more. Anna had been down stairs on the couch all afternoon, soaking in the smell of chocolate and waiting for it to finish. At least, until there was a knock on the door.

She bounced up with a groan, giving a bit of a stretch before making her way to the door and pulling it open. Then she blinked in surprise. "Ben."

He flashed her a bright smile, holding his arms out a bit. "Hey beautiful. Happy Birthday."

It took her a minute to register that he was actually there, before making her way closer and wrapping her arms around him. "What are you doing here?"

He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug.

"Well, I thought you may like some company to celebrate your birthday with. I was planning on coming back for mine, but things happened. I didn't want to miss yours though."

She leaned in close, sinking into the feel of him and resting her chin against his shoulder. "I"m glad you're here."

"Me too. More than you know." He tilted his head a bit to kiss her right under her ear.

"So, do I smell cake?"

"You do. It's the best cake ever." She steps back to let him in, closing the door behind them. "Mama makes it every birthday."

"Oh, I remember the cake. It's been years but I remember it." He let himself be led in, sliding his bag to the inside of the door. "You think Mama won't mind me at the table even though I've been MIA for so long?"

"I think she'll be able to make room."

"Good. And for what it's worth, I'm completely yours. No plans set, nothing. Just going with the wind this time."

"I do like the sound of that," she said with a grin. "Happy birthday to me."

"Happy Birthday to you." He leaned forward to kiss her again, the cheek this time.

She smiled at the kiss, before tugging him back towards the couch. "So tell me. What have you been up to?"

Letting himself be tugged, he flopped down on the couch beside her. He took off his hat, and she would notice that his hair had been cut very short and the very edges of his top hair had a blueish tip to it.

"Not much, really. Same as the last time you came to visit me out on the isles. Just a whole lotta nothing."
