“Ah, c’mon, Lois, isn’t ‘bribe’ just another word for ‘love’?”
“So. I hear you have a half-brother.”
Maddie rolled her eyes back at
Mitch Toth, who was sitting across the booth from her and Anna. “He’s a jerk.”
“Hey, now,” Mitch said, giving her a mock pouty look. “That’s not a very nice thing to say about family, even if it is true.”
“He’s probably not that bad. He’s just had-a lot happening lately,” Anna said slowly, before turning back to Mitch. “How did you hear about this?”
“Dean called my brother to go bail him out,” Mitch sighed heavily, clucking his tongue lightly. “Got yourself a bad boy for an older brother, Maddie. Guess you’re going to have to be the good kid.”
“I was always the good kid,” Maddie said with a look that reminded Anna a bit of her dad, and Anna just sighed slightly. “I aim to give my father a heart attack with boys, not drugs.”
“Good girl,” Mitch smirked, before looking over at Anna. “So if I drop by your job, do I get free booze?”
Anna gave him a look, before shaking her head. “I can’t just give away booze, Mitch.”
“Can I barter using objects that aren’t money?” Mitch asked, raising an eyebrow. “Maybe offer you some kind of service in return. Like maybe, not get myself arrested?”
Anna rolled her eyes. “One-I don’t own the bar. Two-that only benefits you.”
“But then you won’t have to kick me out.”
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Anna sighed. “Because I still have to kick you out anyway when I cut you off.”
Mitch pondered this for a moment, tossing the information around in his head, before pointing over at Maddie, whom he knew for a fact was cool enough with Anna that she would get free booze. “Are you giving her free booze?”
Anna’s jaw dropped at that one. “She’s sixteen!”
“So? Dude, Anna, you took her to see Rocky friggin Horror. The stage show. With nudity. Usually people buy them the booze first.”
“I’d lose my job!” Anna sighed, burying her face in her hands. “Why on earth would I do something like that?”
Mitch stared at her for a moment. “You confuse me, woman.”
“Besides,” Maddie sighed, before starting to bash her eyelashes lightly. “That’s what I have you for.”
“Madeline. Are you out of your mind?” Mitch said, giving her a look. “You’re father would shoot me. I do not wish to die while I’m still young and pretty.”
“You guys never let me have any fun,” Maddie pouted as she leaned back against the booth again.
“Get used to it, kid,” Mitch sighed. “It’s going to stay that way till you turn twenty-one.”
