Does it need one?

For the eljayers among you, no, I'm not succumbing to peer pressure and giving my dear xanga the boot. I just thought I'd flirt with the other side for a change.

Wait---I have nothing to say.

How in blue blazes do I change the colors on this?

hahah! all right, all right. first, go to the top browser thing, let your cursor hover over "manage" then slide the cursor over to "customise." click it, and it'll take you to a site where it asks you to "choose style system," which is pretty straight-forward. You can keep it on S1 (it's what I use and am most familiar with), the old system, or change it to S2, the newer one. Assuming you decide to keep S1, click the "modify journal" link directly under the heading "using S1."

The heading Page Layout Style it's pretty easy to figure out. You choose the type (you can look at various previews before choosing), and then you move on. They don't all have to be the same; e.g., I can have my journal have a "Generator" layout, but my friends' page could be, say, the default livejournal layout. Once you're satisfied with that, move on to Color Theme directly below it.

Here, you can choose a default theme from those provided, or you can put in your own html. I do the latter. If you don't like the proffered color schemes, try fiddling with the colors in the "custom colors" option. If you get into some terrible accident, I can always scoop you back out. Close to the very bottom you'll see a big, empty box where you can type stuff, headed with Style Overrides. Not to sound like a pretentious jerk, but unless you know what you're doing, don't put stuff in there or mess with any commands. These are just simple overrides you can impliment to tweak your journal's overall appearance, but remember that no override will work miracles. I'm sure you're smart and hip enough to figure out html, but if you want help, I'm readily available.

FINALLY, now that you've got it all nifty looking, scroll down to the very last thing on the page - mood icons. Because you don't have a paid eljay account, you must either use a provided mood theme or not use one at all (you can't create your own). You can preview all the moods and choose which you like best. When you've chosen that, congrats, you've finished beautifying your eljay. Click "save changes" and stand back to be amazed.

(FYI for next time - although I don't mind explaining this sort of thing, it can be readily found in the FAQ section of livejournal maintenance. Too late now, you owe me your soul.)
