Lionizing

I recently stumbled upon an interesting bit of reading material called "Some Passages in the Life of a Lion (Lionizing)". It's the beguiling tale of a young man, Thomas Jones, who seems destined for greatness from the moment of his birth, due to the elegant size of his nose. He becomes known as a genius in the field of Nosology, and quite a figure in aristocratic society. He turns up his nose, just so, and it seems the world fawns at his feet. That is, until he duels the Elector (some high government post, I'm assuming) and shoots the man's nose clean off. Then, no one wishes to see poor Thomas, not even his friends. His confidence shattered, he returns home and asks his father, "What is the chief end of my existence?" His father replies that Nosology it is, though he set himself back a bit, for though the greatness of a person in that particular kingdom is measured by his nose, there is no competing with a man who has no nose at all.

Perhaps there is a moral, here. Or a warning.
