29. How often do you think about stories you’ve read? Ever come across something IRL that reminds you of a certain story/character(s)?

Heh, yes. All the time. As I’ve mentioned, for me the whole point of reading a story (other than enjoyment) is to learn about human nature. So I’m constantly thinking of real life like a story, trying to figure out motivations, tone of voice, interpret expressions/body language, and figure out how to respond. Thinking of how the characters I want to emulate act, and using their actions as guides. Sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires, but mostly it’s helpful. It’s how I learned most of my people skills actually, but that’s another story.

Anyway, I’m constantly comparing book situations to real life ones b/c, well, it’s fun to explore the possibility of overlap, and also b/c it can give you ideas on how to deal with the situation. There’re a lot of lessons there too. Things like what not to do if you ever get lost in the woods, that direct communication is always best and reduces confusion, how to recognize when someone really is angry or just needs to vent, or when it would be more politic to keep your mouth shut. It’s not necessarily an active comparison, but having that extra little bit of knowledge about human nature and experience to draw from (even if it is simplified or stereotypical) can be helpful in identifying an appropriate response for real life.
