Enigmas
By Laura

Summer, 1940. River Tam and Kaylee Frye have just finished their studies at MIT. The place is crawling with British guys in suits. Before they know it, the girls are recruited by the intelligence services and in the UK.

At Station X, in Hut 8, breaking coded messages, listening to machines, talking to them, they’re able to prove just how clever they are.

When the captured Enigma machine arrives, it’s so noisy, so busy, it gives the ladies the most dreadful headaches.

“Ssh, girl,” Kaylee quietly tells the machine, one day, running a hand over it. She thinks no-one’s listening, or watching her do this, but Alan Turing sees and hears her.

“Is she talking, Miss Frye?” he asks her, coming over.

“She sure is, Mr Turing,” Kaylee replies, almost smiling. “Just have to know how to listen to her.”

He then starts explaining his ideas about artificial intelligence to Kaylee.

“Ain’t nothing artificial about machines, Mr Turing,” she says, and from the look she gets back, Kaylee knows he understands.

The code-breaking machines and their printouts make sense to River almost the instant she sees them working.

The day she cracks a piece of the sophisticated Tunny code before the Colossus machine, River gets a huge round of applause.

“I just see the patterns,” she replies, shrugging.

“It’s all patterns, Miss Tam,” one of the men says.

“Exactly,” River tells him, fingers covered in ink, pencil behind her ear. “So gather round, and let me show you today’s pattern.”
