“I hope it’s a boy,” says Virginia, drowsily. “A little boy, just like you. We’ll call him Edmund junior. Eddie for short.”

He just sighs and puts his arms around his wife, rests his face against her shoulder. “I’d rather it be a girl, you know. A little girl, just like you. Only we wouldn’t call her Virginia. That would be confusing.”

It’ll be better, he thinks, if the baby favours Virginia. It’ll be easier for everyone. He’s had years to get used to people thinking he’s a freak, but he’s not sure he could handle his child being called one.
