Penny pauses in the hallway of the stranger’s apartment building, frozen in place. “I can’t come in with you,” she says, finally. “I’m not allowed.”

“Are you sure?”

Penny nods.

“Okay. I’ll only be a minute.” He unlocks his door, disappears inside.

Penny waits, paces around the hallway, smiles at a woman and a baby that pass by, but only the baby smiles back.

“Here we are,” the stranger says, grinning. “We can go.”

They walk down the street to the drugstore and put seven rolls of film in to be developed, and Penny doesn’t understand why she was momentarily afraid.
