He finds her sitting at a café table hiding behind an oversized newspaper. “Do you always spy on your little brother’s dates?” he asks before sitting next to her and dropping his book and travel coffeecup on the tabletop.

“It’s not Julian I don’t trust,” she answers simply, looking down at the title of his book. “Steph, you shouldn’t be seen reading this in public. It gives you away.”

“I thought you loved that book.”

She flinches. “No, that was her.”

“Mallorie. I’m sorry.”

She shakes her head, steals a sip of his coffee in an attempt to change the subject.
