Most people think that being a mathematician is all Aileen’s ever wanted. Despite the fact that she made that claim in her Harvard graduate-application personal statement, it is not quite true. She was a child during the last days of the Cold War and her first plan was to become a spy, learn Soviet secrets, save the world from nuclear holocaust.
Anxious to hear back from Harvard, she spends her mornings [waiting for the post-office to open] at the library reading international newspapers. She supposes she might fall back on world-saving espionage if she’s rejected; who would suspect the mild-mannered mathematician?
