People are astonished at how quickly she took to her new job as bartender. She managed to memorize customers and their orders very easily, not to mention names of mixed drinks and the required proportions of liquors and mixers. Her competence is surprising, almost unheard of.

Someone invariably asks about where her hidden-talent for bartending came from. She always smiles sweetly and explains that she was a Harvard-educated mathematician and doctoral candidate with only a handful of pages left in her dissertation. This charms the patrons; they laugh and give her tips and life goes on.
