He was late to dinner, he realized, having spent more time in the library than he had anticipated but luckily everyone that mattered was still there. Liam and Higgs were talking lively over dessert and had saved a seat for him. Abbey was sitting, still a little weepy and red eyed nearby but not too close casting longing looks in Liam’s direction while obviously trying very hard not to. At the Slytherin table was Albus and Scorpius. The blond had a hand on Albus’ back in a friendly way that a few weeks ago would have set Hugo off although now he found that it didn’t really bother him all that much. Lorcan and Lysander were sitting with Rose and he guessed from their absence that Molly, Lucy, and Lily had already left.
Lysander seemed to notice him first, as if he’d been waiting and watching for Hugo to arrive and in response, Hugo held up the paper he’d taken from the library, leaving the green charms book behind for good.
While it was tempting to get to what he really wanted more than anything else, Hugo forced himself to deal with business before approaching pleasure and he sat down next to Liam at the table with a smile. “Hey, guys.”
“There you are!” Liam’s eyes widened and abandoned Palmer in mid joke and grinned him. “I thought you were going to miss dinner completely! Did you fall asleep in the library again? You really got to finish that Muggle Studies essay so you can get back on the team.”
“You were pretty horrible at practice his morning.” Higgs agreed with a disappointed shake of his head.
“No, I didn’t fall asleep, I just got distracted. I’ve got some things I want to make sure you know.”
“This isn’t going to be serious is it?” Liam already looked bored, an expression Hugo knew would be disappearing very shortly. “Because I’m not sure I can take anymore of that bollocks. I’m worn out.”
“That’s okay!” Hugo chirped with a smile. He wasn’t just sure about this anymore, he was excited. “You don’t have to say anything. In fact, I honestly don’t care if you never say anything to me ever again because everything that comes out of your mouth is rubbish.”
Liam was about to reply, Hugo could tell, but before he could he took him by the face, holding him steady as he kissed him full and hard on the mouth. He could feel Finnigan go stunned in his arms, saw Higgs’ eyes widen to the size of galleons in shock, both of them rendered speechless. It wasn’t a romantic kiss by any stretch of the imagination. If he had to define it, Hugo could call it a ‘go fuck yourself’ kiss because that was exactly what he meant by it and when he let Liam go he was sure to look directly into his eyes as he spoke, “I am gay, Liam, but it’s not who I am. I’m not a fag or a ponce or a fairy or a queer or a nancy. Just because a part of me really wants a hot, stiff cock doesn’t mean that’s all that there is to me and the fact that you can’t get beyond that is your problem, not mine. I’m not going to spend anymore time trying to convince you I’m one of you because whatever you are I don’t want to be part of.”
As he stood, he turned towards Palmer who leaned back quickly as if he though Hugo were going to kiss him to. He didn’t, of course, just pointed. “That goes for you too.”
With the furtive looks Abbey had been passing to Liam, Hugo was sure she had witnessed the whole confrontation and when he focused on her he saw that he was right, her eyes were on him and she was a little pale and she hadn’t looked away. “Abbey,” kneeling on the bench he leaned over towards her so he wouldn’t have to raise his voice as he spoke. “What I did to you, it was wrong. You were so very right about me. I didn’t want to admit it but you were right. I shouldn’t have lead you on or wasted your time. I shouldn’t have said all of those mean things to you because they really aren’t true. You really, really need to tone it down a little bit because your psycho mode is a little scary but I’m sure someday you’ll find somebody who will treat you the way you ought to be treated and the two of you will be very happy together.”
Abbey took in a sharp breath, glancing down the table at Liam who was still in shock and then back towards him. Her smile was very small but it was real and she shook her head, “you’re such a bastard, Hugo.”
“I know.” He nodded in agreement. “I really am.”
By the time Hugo could turn his attention to the twins, who he really wanted to talk to more than anyone else, he realized that at some point during his other confrontations, Rose had vacated the table leaving him alone with the pair of blonds. As he approached he saw Lysander’s smile grow larger and larger until it was full and sunny. Lorcan looked less gloomy but Hugo got the distinct impression he didn’t want to be, or maybe that was just because Lysander was holding onto his hand so tightly.
When he sat down across from them, he wasn’t smiling even if Lysander’s made him want to. He knew a few apologies and saucy speeches like he’d given Abbey, Liam, and Palmer weren’t going to be enough to make up with the twins and he didn’t want them to think for a minute that he wasn’t absolutely serious about everything. “Hey.” He began and slid the note from the charms book across to Lysander who snatched it up as if it were a shiny new galleon.
“I wanted to tell you how sorry I was,” Hugo went on before either of them could say anything. Since he was talking to the Scamander twins there was always the possibility, even now, that their conversation could side track to something else and he really didn’t want that to happen now. “I know it’s not enough and probably no amount of apologies will be enough to make up for what I did but I hope it’s a start.”
“It’s all I ne-” Lysander began but was quickly circumvented by his brother.
“We can’t just be friends in private, Hugo. If you’re ashamed of us or yourself then this isn’t going to work out. Lysander and I have been through too much to get dragged into what you’re mired in.”
“I know.” Hugo agreed. “Lorcan, I know that. And I’m not saying that from here on out I’m going to be some poster child, I’m probably going to falter and regress as much as I evolve but even if I make mistake after mistake after mistake I want you to know that I want to be as okay with myself as you two are about yourselves and while I know it’s not impossible for me to do it on my own, I’d rather do it with both of you.”
“I’m not going to let someone we commit to treat us the way you did in front of everyone.” Lorcan insisted, seemingly unmoved. “We get enough of that from every one else besides having to get it from people that can actually hurt us. We’re not impervious or unflappable and we deserve the same amount of respect that we’ve given you.
“I agree with you.” Hugo just kept nodding knowing that Lorcan wasn’t being unreasonable just because he wasn’t as forgiving as Lysander was. “And I won’t do it again. From here on out, we’ll be a team, we’ll be together. I won’t betray that again.”
Lorcan was silent for what felt like a very long time to Hugo and apparently to Lysander as well because when his brother finally spoke again, Lysander released a held breath and fanned himself with his hand as if to keep from getting light headed and passing out. “Alright, Hugo. I forgive you. We both forgive you. Lysander wanted to forgive you from the moment you called us repulsive.”
Hugo had to admit he was a little stunned. He had expected to leave the Great Hall without an answer. He was prepared to make it a daily task of his to track down the twins and tell them how sorry he was as many times and as many days as it took until they believed him. He was determined to prove it to them by standing up for them and protecting them from anyone who may have wanted to tease them. He was willing to do anything that it took but here, after a relatively short conversation, both Lysander and his brother were willing to put the past behind them. “R-really?” He couldn’t begin to hide how stunned he was.
“Really!” Lysander, too wound up to contain himself anymore, pressed Hugo’s cheeks together and leaned over the table to kiss him.
“We’re friends, Hugo,” Lorcan explained. “So we’re not going to hang something like this over your head or make you prove yourself. If you say you’re sorry and that you’ll never do it again then we’ll believe you. What kind of relationship would we have if we didn’t?”
Hugo grinned and stood, carefully but ostentatiously walking over the table around the dishes and plates of food to the shock of the other Ravenclaws around him to sit down between the twins with a smile bright enough to rival one of Lysander’s. “From now on I think I’ll sit right here.”
Hugo wasn’t sure if things smoothed themselves over because of what he had done to set things right or just through shock alone but after that night in the Great Hall things seemed to return to normal relatively quickly. Neither Liam or Palmer said anything when he returned to the room that night to sleep. There weren’t any more cruel pranks at the hands of his house mates and while being openly gay in the school only insured he would be teased and called names during class, he tried not to let it bother him. If anything ever became too much, Hugo knew just where to find the twins to relax and unwind.
Since he’d made up with the twins, his family’s cold shoulder also thawed. Lily went back to wanting to know all about his personal life and whether or not he was dating either or maybe even both of the twins. Albus began to rejoin him for meals after Hugo went out of his way to invite both Albus and especially Scorpius to sit with him. Once he sat Rose down and told her absolutely everything that had happened to him recently from the unfortunate interlude with Scorpius to making up with the twins and after answering every single one of her questions, she was back to scolding him for poor marks and a lack of attention paid to his academics.
Hugo was even conscientious enough to give Liam and Higgs all the space they needed in the locker rooms after Quidditch practice. It was on a Saturday several weeks after he’d kissed Liam in the Great Hall that the two Gryffindor beaters approached him on the field after practice.
“Er...hey, Hugo.” Liam stammered, sharing a glance with Higgs although Hugo wasn’t sure what for. Between the two of them, Liam was definitely the more eloquent if only just.
“Hey guys, good practice.” Hugo decided to have mercy on them and not bring up anything awkward or embarrassing that may make them regret tracking him down in the first place.
“Yeah I guess.” Liam agreed and when they didn’t say anything after that, Hugo just smiled and tipped his head towards the locker room.
“I”m going in.” He told them before starting across the pitch.
“Hey, w-wait up!” Finnigan jogged to catch up, walking along beside him but not too close, Higgs a few steps behind. “I just want to know...” Liam’s voice drifted off again and he looked timidly at Hugo.
Hugo just stared back. He really would have helped Liam out if he had any idea what his team mate was trying to say.
Finally, Liam looked away, muttering a curse under his breath as he shook his head. “Seriously, Weasley,” he announced clear and firm, “how long does it take you to write a bloody Muggle Studies essay? We really need you back on the team!”
Hugo laughed out loud because out of all the things that could have come out of Liam’s mouth he definitely wasn’t expecting that. “I’m working on it tonight, actually!”
And he was, right after he took a shower. He’d been eating oatmeal at six in the morning before practice when Rana hopped up onto the table and right into his goblet of pumpkin juice. He’d acted fast to save her, pulling her out of the liquid before it could smear the ink or soak her paper into pieces. It was a note from the twins, obviously, asking him if he wanted to go over the essay that evening.
After putting away his gear and cleaning up. Hugo headed for the castle and the Room of Requirement, also known as the Secret Laboratory. Inside the twins were waiting for him sitting on a sill in front of a large window that over looked the Quidditch Pitch. “Were you guys watching me practice?” Hugo asked, unable to hide the flattered over tones in his voice.
“Of course we were!” Lysander hopped up to meet him and practically danced across the room to take his hand. Lorcan was right behind him even if he didn’t dance and took his other hand, pulling him deeper into the room.
“We told you we both admired your athletic prowess, didn’t we?” Lorcan reminded him.
“You’re so great,” Lysander echoed, “The way you catch the Quaffles every single time. You’re definitely the best Keeper this school has ever seen!”
“And oh, to be that broom betwixt your thighs,” Lorcan teased as both twins, on either side of him kissed a cheek.
“Stop it!” Hugo complained, not wanting them to stop even for a second. “You’re making me blush.”
“Maybe it’s not us,” Lysander suggested with a little gasp. “Maybe you’re over heating.”
“That could be a serious problem,” Lorcan agreed in all seriousness.
“We have to take drastic actions right away!”
“Post Haste!”
“Tout de suite!”
Before he knew it, although it wasn’t as if he didn’t know it was coming with such an obvious segue, Lorcan was pulling his shirt up over his head and Lysander was undoing his trousers and pulling them, along with his knickers, socks, and shoes right off his body. Hugo did his best to make it easy for them, pulling his arms out of his sleeves and stepping out of his jeans and trainers.
If he thought he knew what came next he would be very wrong. Lorcan hadn’t let go of Hugo’s arms after helping him out of his shirt and he kept the limbs captive as Lysander grabbed a roll of a clear plastic film from the desk of a lab table and wrapped it up over his wrists trapping them behind his back. Hugo struggled to free himself but whatever it was he’d been bound with, he thought it was Saran wrap, was stronger than it looked. The corners of his mouth twitched with the smile at what was swiftly turning out to be less of a study session and more of something else.
“What in the world are you doing to me?” He asked, finding whatever it was and the immobility he was rendered with full of wonderful deviant possibilities he wouldn’t have otherwise thought of.
Lysander just smiled at him as he unrolled another arms length of the sticky, transparent stuff peering at Hugo through it as he beamed, “field research!”
