OOC: This is an AU fic request by my Nathan. It goes AU from the showdown at the opera.

If she were to believe in mercy, she would have taken Rotti's deal. She would have killed her father and ended his pain. There would be no need for him to deal with the consequences of all the truths that were laid out before Shilo and all those watching the opera. If she were to believe in mercy, she would have made the choice he begged her to make.

Shilo doesn't believe in mercy.

Oh, she loved her father. She's Daddy's little girl to the bone. They were so completely co-dependent on each other that nothing, not even years of lies unraveling to reveal the truth, could sever that bond completely. The problem, of course, was she was also her mother's daughter. She could be ruthless, cruel, and calculating. She could and would hit you where it hurt most.

The gun had allowed her to save her father. The gun had allowed her to reclaim her freedom. The cage doors were opened, and the bird took flight. Oh, make no mistake, she was the dutiful daughter. She was at his side while they worked to save him. She was there holding his hand as he came to three days later.

"It will be alright, Daddy. Take your medicine." The words came out sugary sweet. That made it worse. To wield his words, his sins, at him in a way that sounded comforting and full of concern. Her hand was small and soft when she smoothed his hair back from his face.

"Shi..." he couldn't even get her name out before she pressed a finger to quiet him.

"You need to rest. Everything will be alright." The city was erupting around them. Rotti had died on the stage, and his children were running the show. The city was going to burn. You had to burn the disease out if you wanted to save the uninfected area after all.

Shilo could have had it all, she could have had the company and the world at her feet, but that would have required her bending to another man who looked at her like she was a ghost. Marni was dead. None of the men who loved her seemed to understand it. One had died trying to use Marni's daughter to exact his revenge. The other would live to see her grow into someone entirely more dangerous than her mother.

No. She would grow into the person that both nature and nurture had shaped her to be.

When Amber approached her with the job offer, she took it eagerly. The daughters were taking their places in power, and the men could twist in the wind while they watched it happen.

Daddy's little girls were fucking monsters.

It wasn't about the money. It wasn't even about the job itself. No, Shilo's reasons for accepting the offer was simple. It was to make it hurt. To make Nathan see exactly what he had done to her. What being her mother's living legacy had done to her. Seventeen years of being poisoned to be protected. He did it out of love and out of hate.

She understood. Because not she would protect him by picking up the scalpel and accepting her legacy. It would be done out of love and out of hate.

The sound of her comm going off made both father and daughter look at her wrist. "Yes, Ms. Largo?"

The next words that came out made Nathan pale. Ninety days delinquent. Someone had to collect. Shilo stood up easily and offered the sickest little smile at her father. "You don't mind if I use the room at home, yes? I know how you worry when I'm away from home."

Nathan didn't have the chance to answer. The look on his face was as satisfying as Shilo had hoped it would be. Moving fluently like a girl who had recovered from being poisoned and was taking her life back, Shilo exited the room without a single look back to her father. If he listened carefully, though, he could hear her sing a familiar song.

"Didn't I say the world was cruel? Didn't I?"
