My dad wants to get me a computer for graduation. I want a Mac but he wants to get me a PC, and I'm not sure weather a laptop or a regular computer would be better in the long run. I'm going to major in art so I'm going to be doing a lot of stuff with Photoshop and maybe movie editing...stuff like that. I always thought Mac's were better for that ( Read more... )

Noticed your post. From what I see you have two main things here:

1) Desktop vs a Notebook
The questions you need to ask yourself here are:

a. Do you need something portable that you can carry around?
b. Do you need access to applications like Photoshop on the run?

A desktop is good for the long run, since you can easily upgrade it by changing the processor, memory, graphics card etc. A notebook on the other hand is usually difficult to upgrade since all the components are pretty tightly coupled within. Plus more importantly notebook upgrades are most costly. Myself I am a notebook guy and I love it. I think they kick as much processing power as a regular desktop, and I am able to do all the really heavy 3d stuff on it. Make sure you get a good graphics card if you go for a notebook ...

2) Mac vs PC
Well, sure the idea of a Mac might seem cool, BUT the software support for Mac is not as good as the PC. There are far far more softwares available out there for the PC right now and that might change in the foreseeable future. True, Photoshop runs on the Mac too, but some of the other nifty graphics tools like 3D Studio Max etc. are only on the PC ...

Good luck ... Lemme know what are your other considerations. Might be able to give some tips :)
