From Japanese wikipedia:
In the 2nd year of Genki (1571 AD), he lost eyesight in his right eye while suffering from smallpox.
Later when asked "What happened to your right eye?" by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, Masamune replied "When I fell from a tree, my right eye came out, and since it looked too delicious, I ate it." It's also said that Katakura Kagetsuna* removed the unsightly bad eye with a knife.
....yeah I. I love the fact that Masamune's crazy in Sengoku Basara really isn't that much exaggerated from actual history, when you get down to it.
*Katakura Kojuurou's given name; "Kojuurou" is also the name used to refer to the head of the family, a title and position first held by Masamune's attendant Kagetsuna.
