Genesis is one of the standout stories of the original run. It gave the definitive origin for the mean little pepper pots and introduced one of the most important new elements to their story.
After the Sontaran Experiment, the Doctor, Sarah Jane, and Harry take the transmat back to Space Station Nerva. But they find themselves diverted to Skaro, the Dalek home world. The Time Lords believe the Daleks are a threat to the future of all life, and have brought the Doctor to try and change that. The Doctor does have some qualms about doing this, seeing how much it will change the future. But as events unfold he finds himself with few options. He ends up postponing the Dalek's progress, but not really stopping it. In fact, from the way things appear in the new series, it could be argued the Doctor ended up failing.
This episode did have some of the most evocative moments. The opening scene of the gas masked soldiers in the fog of war and their gunning down was one of the more memorable sights of the series. Davros, the mad creator of the Daleks with his megalomaniacial vision of the Daleks ruling the universe made him one of the most memorable villains of Doctor Who lore. He also became such a dominant factor in Dalek stories after his debut the Daleks got relegated to little more than his minions. The New Series did a pretty good job of righting that idea, freeing the Daleks of their subordinate roles to Davros and giving them a lot more power.
It's easy to see that the creators of the new series looked back to this episode and must have used it as the starting point for the Last Great Time War. Clearly this must have been the opening shot, with the Doctor finding himself in the middle of this battle on an increasing level, especially when we get to Sylvester McCoy and Remembrance for the Daleks at the end of the original series.
This was definitely one of the high points of Tom Baker's run as the Doctor. Next up is Revenge of the Cybermen, which I have pretty much forgotten so I'm looking forward to refreshing my memories about it.
