Chapter One:
Jung Yunho tossed his keys onto the counter and sat down, pulling a folder of recently committed crimes in front of him and opening it. Out in the countryside, there was a fire, the arsonist who caused it still unidentified and still at large. There were three victims, only one surviving. It was a young man and his parents, the parents burning to nearly an unrecognizable state. Their son had been admitted into the hospital and was still recovering. No matter how many news reporters and journalists showed up to interview the only survivor, he shooed them away, not wanting to be bothered about the matter any longer.
Yunho sighed as he stretched his arms above his head. He was about to get up and make a cup of coffee when his landline rang. He reached over and picked it up, the caller ID saying it was Junsu. “Didn’t I just drop you off at home? What’s with calling me so late at night?” he growled, annoyed that his partner had phoned him a mere ten minutes after they parted.
“I’m sorry,” Junsu replied. “It’s just that I’m watching the news and the person who started that fire in the countryside still hasn’t been caught. What are we going o do if he comes here and we don’t know it? He could kill us.”
“For the last time, Junsu, he isn’t coming here. Arsonists tend to have reasons why they start fires. Whether it’s for insurance money, to kill someone, or just because they’re a pyro-freak, they tend to have reasons. Now go to bed. We have to be up and at the station at five.” He disconnected the call, slamming the phone back onto it’s cradle. “Damned idiot.”
Getting up, he headed for his room in his apartment, deciding not to have any coffee. He sprawled out on top of his bed, the soft sheets inviting after a long day of work. He closed his eyes, telling himself that he would only rest for a moment and then he’d get up, shower, and then return to get a decent amount of sleep for work the next day. It being midnight only gave him about four hours of sleep anyway, but he had stayed up the night before to do more work at the police station. Staying up two nights in a row and then doing more police work wasn’t a smart move especially when he was in charge of driving the cruiser and bringing in the detained criminals.
Yunho awoke to the alarm blaring. He rolled over, eyes widening at the time. It was ten after five in the morning and he was late. “Shit!” he cursed, running to his dresser. He pulled out a pair of black jeans, a navy blue t-shirt, and a pair of boxer shorts. He hurried to the bathroom, turning the water on in the shower as he pulled his clothes off. Stepping under the water, he yelped. “Too hot, too hot…” Fumbling with the knobs, he turned off the water, stepping out and drying off as best he could before frantically pulling on his clothes. He towel dried his hair, looking in the mirror and fluffing it slightly so it didn’t look so flat. Leaving the apartment, he hurried to his car and pulled out his phone.
“It’s me. I overslept and I’m on my way right now. I’ll be there in just a few minutes. Yeah, Junsu, I know. For once you can gloat about being on time and I-” Yunho swerved, narrowly missing the car that sped out in front of him. “You jackass! No, not you Junsu. Some asshole just cut me off. Yeah, I’m on my way and I won’t crash. Relax. I do this all the time when I’m in the cruiser.”
Arriving a few minutes later at the station, Yunho hopped out of his car, growling at the scratch it now had thanks to the person who cut him off. Junsu came running out, gun in his holster. “Jung Yunho, go in and start pushing those papers,” he said, heading to the cruiser.
Yunho stopped in his tracks. “What?! I am no paper pusher. I’m the one who does the crime fighting here.”
“Not today. Since you’re late, I was given the keys to the cruiser. Go in and get started. I need to get going or else I’ll lose this chance to get promoted.”
Yunho swore under his breath as he went inside, pulling out the desk chair that the police chief signaled to him and sitting down. He ran his hands over his face, trying to keep calm for having been trapped inside today. He looked at the computer monitor, seeing his reflection in it. Sighed, he turned it on, hearing the whir of the motor in the modem. When the chief walked over to him, he looked up, mentally noting the frown and disappointment on his face.
“Sorry for being late today, chief. I overslept,” Yunho murmured quietly, secretly hating himself for missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime.
The chief sat down on the edge of his desk, placing a hand on his shoulder, and giving him a look that made him feel as if he had contracted some sort of incurable disease and he was being pitied. “Jung, I think it’d be better if you took a week or two off,” the chief began.
Yunho shook his head furiously, eyes wide. “But, Chief, I don’t need to take time off. I can work just fine and today is the only day I’ve been late since I starting working here over three years ago.”
“I know you’ve worked hard. I just think it’d be better for you to rest. I’ve seen the way you fall asleep in the break room as if you haven’t slept decently in months. Jung, take time off. When you’ve rested for two weeks, come back and I’ll have a new position waiting for you. Go ahead and go home.”
After the police chief left, Yunho sat there numbly, trying to get a grasp of what he had just been told. Does this mean I’m temporarily out of work? he asked himself mentally. He looked at the desk he was seated at, thinking of how many late hour nights he had spent there, soaring through the ranks to be where he was now. Getting up, he made his was to his car, ignoring the concerned questions the other officers asked him. He mechanically started the engine, fastened his seatbelt, and left.
Reaching home, he shut the engine off, but didn’t get out. He stared at his apartment building, wondering how wonderful it would be to start his day over. He’d have gone back in time to the night before, doing everything he could possibly do to keep himself awake. He banged his fist on the dashboard before leaning his forehead against it. Te next thing he remembered was the owner knocking on his window, stirring him from sleep. He looked up before finally climbing out of the vehicle.
"Are you Jung Yunho from apartment 3C?” the owner asked, holding a folded piece of paper.
“Yes, that’s me,” he replied.
“This is for you. A friend of yours stopped by and gave me this. He was going to give it to you himself, but when he found you out here sleeping, he asked for me to let you sleep a little longer. Here.”
Yunho accepted the piece of paper, watching as the owner walked away, telling a person to follow him. He didn’t pay too much attention to the stranger with boxes in his arms as he unfolded the paper, recognizing Junsu’s handwriting instantly.
Yah, Yunho~
I dropped by to see how you were…
But you were sleeping, so I left.
I’ll call you after work, okay?
-Junsu ^^
Yunho scoffed, stuffing the paper into his pocket. He went inside, checking his mailbox before heading upstairs. He noticed the door to the apartment next to his open and heard the building owner talking with someone. He was about to just walk passed it, minding his own business, but the owner walked out and grabbed his arm.
“Yah, Jung Yunho, you know how to fix things, right?” the owner asked, tightening his grip on Yunho’s arm.
“I know how to do simple things. Why? Are you remodeling this apartment?”
“No, I just got it rented. The tenant needs a few things fixed, so come on in and fix them.” Before he could really voice a protest, Yunho felt himself being dragged into the apartment, his new neighbor coming from the hall leading to the kitchen, stopping when he saw him. The owner seemed not to notice as he turned to Yunho. “Yah, kid, introduce yourself.”
Yunho shot him a glare before looking at his new neighbor. “I’m Jung Yunho,” he said, offering a hand. When the other didn’t shake it, he felt a little self-conscious and he cleared his throat as he dropped it to his side. “I live next door and was on my way there when he stopped me and told me to come in here.”
The man looked from him to the owner and back before he let out a small sigh. “I’m Jaejoong. Kim Jaejoong. Are you the one he said could fix things?” the person replied. Yunho simply nodded. “Come with me then.”
Glad to do so, Yunho pried the owner’s hand off of him and followed Jaejoong into the kitchen. When they were out of earshot of the owner, he sighed and inspected his arm. “Damn. That old man still has a firm grip. Any longer and he’d have left a bruise…”
“The sink is clogged,” Jaejoong stated, bringing Yunho out of his thoughts. He held out a toolbox toward Yunho, his face stony and serious. “Fix it. I’ll go see if there’s anything else that needs to be fixed while you’re here.”
Yunho took the toolbox and watched Jaejoong leave the kitchen. He glared at the other’s back as he left, not liking how he was being ordered around when he wanted to just crawl into his cozy bed and sleep the next two weeks away. Sighing, he opened the cupboard under the sink and grabbed a flashlight. Taking a wrench, he loosened the bolts keeping the pipes together. He had to bury his face in the side of his arm when black sludge poured out, smelling of a cross between a skunk’s spray and vomit. He held his breath as he left the room, searching for Jaejoong.
“I need to go to the hardware store. It’s going to take a little while to clear those pipes and I’m going to need to get a strong cleaner,” he said, fiddling with the flashlight in his hands.
“I’ll go, too. I need to get some things anyway.” Jaejoong looked at the owner. “I don’t mean to sound rude and I know this is your building, but will you please leave while I’m out? I don’t like other people in my place of residence while I’m not around.”
Yunho walked with Jaejoong out to his car, motioning for the other to get in. Climbing in behind the wheel, Yunho grumbled something under his breath at hearing his phone ring. Answering the call, he tried to keep his voice light, but even he knew it sounded forced. “Everything is fine, chief. Yeah, I might even go out of the city for a bit. Thanks for giving me the time off.” Disconnecting the call, he opened the back of his phone and took out the battery, throwing it into his backseat. “Jackass of a boss.”
Jaejoong looked at him quietly before turning to stare out the window. “Do you think we can go to the supermarket or something after the hardware store? I need to get food.”
Yunho stared at him, blinking before he started his car. What am I? His chauffer? Hell no we can’t go to the supermarket after this, he thought to himself. He offered Jaejoong a smile and nodded. “We can stop there, too. Anything else you can think of that you need, let me know and we’ll just go to all of the places while we’re out.”
The drive to the hardware store was almost painfully silent. Yunho was sure that he could hear his blood flowing through his veins. At every red light, he’d chance a glance in Jaejoong’s direction, trying to figure out more about him without outright asking. Pulling into the parking lot, Yunho found a spot not too far away from the building and he turned off the engine. He saw Jaejoong climb out of his car and shut the door, sighing before he did the same.
“Yah, Jung Yunho!” someone called as soon as he stepped out. He turned and smiled at seeing his lifelong friend, Park Yuchun, hurrying over to him.
“Yah, how have you been?” Yunho asked him, glancing over to see that Jaejoong was just standing there, looking bored.
Yuchun followed his gaze, a smile breaking across his face. He threw an arm over Yunho’s shoulders and pulled him closer so that only the two of them could hear. “Is he your boyfriend?”
Yunho shook his head. “He’s just a friend. Not even a friend, really. He moved into the apartment next to me and he doesn’t know his way around the city yet, so I’m toting him to where he needs to go.”
Yuchun nodded as if it was something he already knew. “Well, have fun trying not to fall for him. Remember what happened when you first met Junsu?” Yuchun laughed at the memory, causing Yunho’s face to flush.
“Yah!” Yunho shoved his friend away, trying not to hit him. “You said you weren’t going to keep bringing that up!” Yunho walked toward Jaejoong, stopping beside him long enough to apologize for taking so long and to say that they could get going.
Yuchun looked around, a mischievous smile on his face. He bit back a laugh when Jaejoong looked over his shoulder at him. Waving at him, he laughed when Jaejoong turned back around quickly. Yuchun shook his head, climbing into his car. “Jung Yunho, you are going to end up falling for that gorgeous stranger. And if you don’t, I probably will. Either way, the two of us are basically out of luck. I have a feeling he’s going to make you crazy.”
Inside the hardware store, Jaejoong and Yunho were silently staring at the carts, both wondering if they needed one or not. “We’ll be able to carry whatever you need, right?” Yunho asked, finally deciding that they wouldn’t need one just so he could get the trip over with in order to go home.
“We should be able to carry whatever we need. You go get what you need to fix my drain, I’ll go look around for the other things I need,” Jaejoong replied. “Let’s meet back at one of the registers.”
Yunho nodded. “Sounds fine to me.” He watched Jaejoong walk away, turning down one of the aisles. He leaned over, smiling as he stared. “He has a nice ass…” He straightened up and cleared his throat when Jaejoong looked back at him. He felt his face burn slightly as he started off in a random direction. "I need to be more discreet when I stare at him.”
