Annoying phone calls and scams

Jul 25, 2008 01:00

On Tuesday the 22nd of July 2008 I got a phone call. I wasn’t able to get to the phone in time so it went to voice mail and showed up as a missed call. I Googled the telephone number. Over the next 2 hours I got several more calls. Tuesday I had about 8 calls total from 3 phone numbers.
801-705-6237
800-259-7317
315-207-4761

Answering the calls and asking to be taken off their list, telling them I am on the “NO Call List” and pressing 4 to opt out have been fruitless. The calls increased in frequency on Wednesday the 23rd of July 2008. I put the numbers in my cell phone, gave them long zzzz names and set the ring tone for silent.

Thursday the 24th of July 2008 I had a total of 32 missed calls between the three numbers. Then there were another 3 calls between 2100 and 2123 hours while I was on the phone with a friend. It’s really hard to talk when the phone keeps beeping in my ear!! It also became a hassle to make calls out when I would look at my phone and see there was a call trying to come in. I was fed up and pissed off. Plus I was beginning to itch. I tend to break out in hives in stressful situations.

I called my cell phone carrier AT&T. I wanted them to do something. Ideally I would like for them to block the calls from the numbers. Nope. That call was useless. It was a waste of my time and only served to infuriate me further.

Next I called my local police department. They took a report and advised me to call where the calls were originating from. I did feel somewhat better by a smidgen having a police report filed. She was not optimistic that anything could be done from this end since the calls originated in other states. That deflated me a bit.

Then I called the Oswego, NY Police Department. That is where the 315 207 4761 showed it was from. The officer there could not or would not file a report. Lt. Nicholson informed me that he could not knock on the door of a phone number. My online searches were fruitless in providing a specific address. All I found online was
Level 3 Communications, Llc - Ny
Unpublished number - Verizon?
{University Finder / Collection Agency / century marketing - magazines}. He was not able to find a business with that number and all the information I gave him was seemingly useless in helping to find out who was making the calls and an address for their physical location.

At this point I was extremely frustrated again. My plan tomorrow is to call Verizon and if that is their carrier file a complaint with them. I also have the phone numbers for FCC.GOV to call and file complaints. I’ll even try to find the phone numbers on the Better Business Bureau website and file complaints there too! If I get a call Saturday? I’ll call a local media watchdog. I have my complaints and can give plenty of website URL’s with others complaining to back up my story.

Finally I called the Provo, UT Police Department about the 801-705-6237 number. It seems the 24th is a holiday in Utah. Officer Morgan was accommodating though. He called and left a message informing them of my call, the police report filed in Texas and the complaint filed with Provo, Utah Police Department.

I can’t find where the 800-259-7317 number originates from at the point. Hopefully with further investigation and tenacity I’ll be able to find it and report to the local police department for that number as well. All I can find is get your degree (dot) net. Online one of the address given on their site is 135 Townsend St, Ste 626, SF CA 94107. It’s late now but I’ll try calling the San Francisco, CA Police Department in the morning.

In a nutshell:
They call your phone number umpteen dozen times a day and record what time of day someone answers. That way they make more money reselling the numbers to telemarketers by providing times someone picks up the phone. Though some will also try to get personal information claiming to be bill collectors or selling magazines that will never come in the mail. Other numbers related to these are
800-793-0282   /   213-537-1432   /   307-215-1001   /   800-438-2542
888-249-3457   /   888-508-2459   /   866-403-9140   /   866-201-4573.
I’ve already listed all of these in my phone and set the ringer to silent. At least they won’t be waking me up or have my phone ringing all day long.

I have additional information for the Utah number.  If anyone has or can find additional information about the NY number or the 800 number I'd certainly be grateful!  And if anyone has any suggestions I'm listening.
