music that is boho-dorable

Mar 24, 2010 14:12

Today for music and lyric wednesday, I'm celebrating the fact that I've remembered, and am posting four songs to make up for lost time. W00+   Today is more of a departure from an emo discussion of what music means to me and more about sharing new music in my life. I was going to post Paul McCartney's 'Teddy Boy' because it floated into my head a few hours ago, but I have something much better for you instead. Enjoy!

This first song is from a group introduced to me by generalhenry, who just sent me a link to the youtube video this morning. It's called 'Hail Mary' and the band is called Pomplamoose. Fresh-faced and boho-dorable, their covers of people like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé are pretty sweet (see below), and often better than the original song, IMO...

Hail Mary
Oh Mary I'm not coming home too soon.
Tell all our babies that daddy has gone to the moon.
My feet were sold to this winding road.
My feet were sold, baby, long ago.

Oh Mary I've left you a pile of dough
Under the floor boards near Billy-Joel's radio.
Baby I love you, but there's no chance.
Baby I love you, but where's romance?

Little Rock, I'm on my way to San Jose,
Driving at 90 an hour.
The Devil knows me.

Oh Mary I think of your eyes every day.
If I could see them I surely would not run away.
When we were young there was so much time.
When I was young there was so much time.

Okay, I know nothing about the band, but it's always fun to hear you city's name in a song.

For extra fun, here's  the Pomplamoose cover of "Single Ladies":

You guys know the lyrics, but I suggest strongly enough going through their other youtube videos and seeing what elses theys got (hint: cover of "Telephone").

NEXT
...a couple of songs I had to dig up out of my recent favorites on Last.FM:

The first is a super mellow song called "At Forest Edge" by a band called Vetiver.

At Forest Edge
At forest edge
I swore I saw
A lovely young girl
From afar
(Did she smile?)
Yes, she seemed to smile right at me
So I stepped in
(Was it dark?)
Yes, the light was leaving
When came moving off the leaves

Where did she go?

Long branches wet
To hide promises
No one would keep
Wanting to catch a glimpse
I ran deep into the woods
Moving across
I look back to find
I was lost

Up ahead I hear her footstep
But I don't see her anywhere
It's not like me to run off and leave the rest behind
My way home
And just leave this girl and these woods alone
(Is she real?)
Real as I'll never know
The setting sun she soon won't show a thing
I've got to find a path
through the trees
I've got to find my own way

Tonight, I've got to find the right way

I pictured Santa Cruz and a bunch of groovy hippie college students walking in the woods on a spring evening. I thought it had a nice rhythm to it.

And FINALLY
Beirut. This guy seems pretty interesting, a point which is probably reinforced by the weirdness of the music video for 'Elephant Gun."

Elephant Gun
If I was young, I'd flee this town
I'd bury my dreams underground
As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight

Far from home, elephant gun
Let's take them down one by one
We'll lay it down, it's not been found, it's not around

Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin - take the big game down

Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin - take the big game down

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the night

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the silence, all that is left is all that I hide

I'm just going to leave it at that.

EDIT: The more I've been listening to Pomplamoose the more I love them. And also? Hearts and bunnies and sunshine!!!
