i'm sitting on the subway on my way to the mars building on college for a microsoft conference on game programming with their new xna development tools. woke up half an hour later than i intended to, but managed to sneak some breakfast in. no idea what to expect. depending on how engrossed i get with the presented material, i'll keep posting my impressions.

just got through registration, and sitting in the auditorium waiting for the event to start. the audience looks like a 50/50 mix of both game devs and just plain gamers. krispy says the gamers will be sorely disappointed. it looks like one teacher brought his high school class to the event. i think that exhilerates me more than anything. i wish my high school teachers had brought me to shit like this.

after some gaffs with demoing the ide by jean-luc, davey jackson from garagegames came up to demo some of the features of the torque x dev tools with some pre-existing demos, which was pretty cool.

christian came up and showed off the environment, and bits of the api. build a simple pong in literally minutes (thanks to some cut-and-paste code - nothing complex, only time-saving). looks really slick so far. he's going to spruce it up after lunch.

lunch - free pizza and pop. krispy gets shafted with a diet pepsi. i stick to my water bottle.

christian is talking about content management and the content pipeline. something about naked dwarves. haha. all the graphics and sound import and usage look braindead easy to use. pong now has red, rounded paddles, a round ball, a ping pong table background, and the pong, pong sound effects, as so eloquently expressed by christian.

10 minute break for people who didn't get pizza before it ran out at lunch (there's more now).

christian just got through going over the rest of the content pipeline tools, and the component architecture. some pretty exiting stuff. the event has been great overall from the point of view of an amateur game developer, quickly going over basic game programming concepts and standard architectures.

taking another break for drinks before davey from garagegames comes back up for more info on torque x. in response to a question about the torque x product, he's discussing the differences between commercial and independant game development restrictions and practices, and the targeted audience of torque.

some general talks on casual gaming and educational gaming.

the event's over, and they're collecting evaluation forms for a draw for a brand new xbox 360 premium edition with a couple games.

i didn't win =(

to send us off, christian booted up gears of war, and earned himself a round of boos from the gaming crowd for choosing the "casual" difficulty. after a restart due to lighting issues, he repicked hardcore, and won the adulation of the crowd. a nice little promo for gears.
