.
She wears pink ballet shoes.
Not because she used to dance (clearly she's not that co-ordinated) but because her mother was a dancer.
.
He has a way with words. Other people's words, but words nonetheless.
.
She needs someone to grab her hand and tell her that everything will be alright, even if it won't be. Or at least to offer.
.
Yes, he loves tennis.
.
The night before her birthday, she cries herself to sleep. And it's not all poetic and romantic, she's just sad and it finally hits her.
.
She wishes she had read the letter.
.
"I think you're entirely lovely," he says one afternoon without warning when she asks him what he'll be drinking today.
.
When they dance, she doesn't lean into him, doesn't lose her breath, and she certainly doesn't tell him.
.
Love me till my heart stops.
.
"I'm head over heels."
Aurelie smiles at her, "I know."
Penny ducks her head, brushes her hand through her hair. When she looks back up, her friend bites her lip and grins.
.
He's listened to classical music since he was a kid, and now he can't break the habit.
.
She misses him and smiles, like it's a good thing.
.
He makes lists; places he wants to go, things he wants to do, things he'll never say to her, favourite trees, nice poems, songs that remind him of her.
.
A day without incident might occur, then out of the blue, someone will order a caramel macchiato or walk by with a tennis racket and she'll break.
.
Alone in the store, she whispers, "I'm not in love. I'm not in love. I'm not in love. I'm not in-" she gasps when he touches her elbow, her eyes wide and her cheeks flush watermelon.
"How long have you been standing there?" she asks after a moment, her mouth left open.
"Not long," almost smiling.
.
His fingers lightly brush hers as she hands him his change, and he smiles, revealing straight teeth and gleaming blue eyes.
.
She bites her lip, closes her eyes, takes a breath.
'Yep,' she thinks, 'this is it.'
.
She'll remember his fingers being slightly damp but warm against hers.
.
Aurelie teaches him the rules of tennis with coffee mugs and sugar bowls so that his dad doesn't get suspicious.
.
She never throws out the notes. She keeps them all tucked away in her coat pockets. (Maybe, one day, when she's forgotten about all of this, she'll see one and smile.)
.
He writes lyrics on his arms.
.
She writes out all of her orders in cursive on her notepad. So when she drops an order, he picks it up and slides it into his pocket.
He still has it.
.
She spies him across the room - not hers.
.
He doesn't mean to lie, it just sort of pops out of his mouth like a bubble, and once he's said it, it's not as if he can take it back.
.
"How's the tennis going?"
"Really good," and smiles.
