When she's six, the boy that sits behind her pulls her hair and chases her around the playground. Lily, her best friend from kindergarten, says that he likes her.
Penny thinks he's got cooties.
ii.
When she's eleven, the boy down the street walks to school with her every day for two weeks.
One morning, he tries to kiss her, but she ducks her head and kicks him in the shins.
She doesn't like his black hair.
iii.
On her thirteenth birthday, she goes to the movies with a group of friends. Her friends make her sit next to a boy from the "cool" group who apparently has a crush for her. For any other thirteen year old, this would be the best thing that ever happened in their life. He tries to hold her hand, but she slips it into the popcorn and stops paying attention to the movie.
She's never been a big fan of what's popular.

Her best friend's sweet sixteenth birthday party is a Saturday night. No parents, open house, too many teenagers with too many hormones. She has too much to drink, and lets a boy take her upstairs. He tries to unbutton her blouse but she slaps his cheek and walks back downstairs.
She hates the smell of him.

When she's twenty, two weeks after him, a lovely boy with eyes that shimmer and a face so perfect you'd expect it hurts, wearing a vest the colour of the sky, walks into the cafe and she almost freezes when he sits at his table. She shakes it off, walks over to him; "How are you today?" with a smile. He orders a caramel macchiato, and she can't smile at him. When he leaves, she slips out the back door and crumples to the ground.
She was never one for happy endings.
