My first politco post (or I heart tourogal!)

Jul 31, 2007 04:23

I would like to thank everyone on my flist for putting up with the blogathon madness yesterday! I would also like to say whazzup to my new friends ginamariewade, tinhuviel, kittenfuze who trundled over to my blog during the 'thon! Now on to the political part of my post.

I've applied dinner party etiquette to my blog...no politics! However, that's changed. First, a little background about me so you know where I stand!

Some of you may know that I lean towards the left in terms of politics. However, I'm begrudgingly registered as a Democrat. My politics are more in the Libertarian bent, conversely, I refuse to join the Libertarian party because that's like flushing my vote down the toilet! I will never register in the GOP. If I do that, you'll know that I need to put in the loony ward.

Not that my vote counts for anything anyway... Need I remind everyone of Indecision 2000? Here's more info about the electoral college- basically the founding fathers deemed the public too stupid to choose a suitable person for president. Every election, DH has to pull teeth to get me to vote. DH is endearing naive; hopefully my cynicism won't taint him too much!

A little history lesson, did you know that the Republican Party was "founded in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and modernizers, the Republican Party rose to prominence with the election of Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president. The party presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction and was harried by internal factions and scandals towards the end of the 19th century. Early in the 20th century, Theodore Roosevelt's presidency briefly associated the GOP with progressivism, but by the Roaring Twenties, the party's economic ideology had developed into the pro-business model seen today. Today, the Republican Party supports a strong pro-business platform, with further foundations in economic libertarianism, nationalism, and a brand of social conservatism increasingly based on the viewpoints of the Religious Right."

"From the Civil War until the Great Depression, blacks voted for Republican candidates by an overwhelming margin; in the Southern states, they were often not allowed to vote, but received Federal patronage appointments from the Republicans. Blacks switched to the Democrats in the 1930s when the New Deal offered them both patronage and welfare. In the South they began voting again after 1965, when a bipartisan coalition passed the Voting Rights Act, and ever since have formed 20% to 50% of the Democratic vote in the South."(swiped from wikipedia) Another reason, is between lynching getting out of hand in the 1920s and early 1930s and the rise of the KKK, the Republican party was basically sitting on their hands so the Dems lured the blacks away from the Republican party by promising to take care of the problem. We see how well they did that!

I'm also wary of calling myself an independent. Ralph Nader left a soapy taste in my mouth. I find that people on the extreme ends of the spectrum tend to be proportionately close-minded. The problem with the left is that they are not glossy enough. The Right-wingers have the right idea- wearing good fashion and appearing clean-cut! No one is going to take someone who looks goofy and unkempt seriously; even if they are saying something that makes sense! See case in point, Ralph Nader.

Why the heck am I writing all this mess?
I just saw this post on tourogal's blog. This is an article about the Jena 6- who are facing charges because they are black and all it all started when they sat under the whites only tree at a LA high school. This happened in 2006! WTF?!

My favorite quote is from the town librarian Barbara Murphy, "The nooses? I don't even know why they were there, what they were supposed to mean. There's pranks all the time, of one type or another, going on. And it just didn't seem to be racist to me."

ROFLMAO!!!!!!! Because if I don't laugh I'll cry...

The south is a hot bed of intolerance and idiocy. What may shock you is that its just as bad in New England (especially Maine.) There's a reason why there aren't too many black people/minorities living there... Apparently Joe Lieberman has been spending way too much time waffling to the point he banged his head and is now touched by idiocy as well! To compare a Christian preacher to Moshe Rabbenu? Outrageous! I think that borders on blasphemy! Now if Joe declared this preacher the Moshiach, I'm sure that there would be an outcry that he committed kefirah and declare a "min"! To me, he damn near did this!

And yes, I did vote for him and Al Gore in 2000. Oh...the shame of it!

For people that try to dump Orthodox Judaism with right-wingers should be reminded that the Jewish people were the first lefties of the world...all you have to do is look at the Exodus. Revolting from slave-owners and believing in one G-d when everyone else on the planet was a pagan? Scandalous!

dee dee dee, democrates, history, gop, politco, african-american, joe lieberman, 2000 election
