The protest was this weekend. We did a small demonstration in Cleveland and there was a small show with a few bands. Two of the bands/musicians were pretty good, the others were meh. We met some cool people and some annoying people. This lady on the bus had 2 kids with her, she sat in front of us and the kids were behind us. Annoying as you can probably guess. Also they put in a dvd of Will Ferrell doing a last big show as George W Bush and they flashed a picture of a penis, so we had to hear the lady complain about that for a while.
There was another annoying lady that her normal voice was like a yell. I really wanted to tell her to shut up. She also said that any man who watched porn was a terrible person and I guess some lady at one time told her that she let her man watch porn and this lady called her a hoe. Strange kind of mentality for someone going to a peace demonstration.
Had an awesome time in D.C. It is an awesome feeling being surrounded by like-minded people who are all striving and standing up for the same things you are. There were, I don't know for sure, probably a few thousand people there marching. It was a long march, about 6 miles. On top of that we walked to the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the World War Two Memorial, the Washington Memorial, and a very small, not well kept, World War One Memorial. Also I took a shit at the World War Two Memorial bathroom, and there were a few scraggly looking guys in there, whom I believe lived in there. Which was slightly unnerving, I was slightly scarred that I would get mugged. The bathroom isn't in a central building or anything being secured, it is just it's own little thing about a hundred yards away from the ww2 memorial. I wasn't mugged or even spoken to for that matter.
There were some people along the march, on the outside of the barriers they had blocking off the street, that were protesting us. They had signs that said, "America, Love it or Leave it." Like somehow protesting war is equal to saying I hate America. There was also a sign that said, Go to hell, you dishonor the graves of hollowed grounds, or something like that. Amanda took a picture of the sign.
It was funny, a few times people would just run off to the side behind a bush or a tree, and just start peeing.
At one point someone in a group of Anarchist protesters threw a rock at the glass in a building nook that a cop was behind, I don't understand how throwing rocks at people helps promote a message of peace. Also at one point the Anarchists decided to make a line and block the protest. I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish but it was stupid. Why come to a peace demonstration to throw rocks at cops and block the flow of the demonstration.
Speaking of cops, there were a lot of cops. Like the whole force probably. Insane. They were wearing riot gear, big shields, billy clubs, helmets, vests, leg protectors. It was intense. Some cops were taking pictures and had video cameras, some looked annoyed and some didn't seem to care one way or the other. All in all I had a good time. A lot to do in such a short time, very tiring. If we decide to go in the future, it would probably be better to stay overnight in a hotel or something. That is the end of my hippie post.
Amanda will do the post with all the pictures I'm sure so keep a look out. :)
